I went shopping today. I was going to buy a Les Paul. A Custom Classic Goldtop was the plan.
That's not exactly what happened. I went in and had a play with the LP and liked it a lot. Great girth and thump to it, and it played nicely. I was ready to buy it, when an ebony SG standard caught my eye. I gave it a bash and immediately preferred it. It was lighter and thinner, but sounded every bit as awesome, with more focus in the mids. It was the one... almost. Next to this SG standard was a red SG Jr, with one P90. I loved the look of this thing. Stripped down, balls to the wall R n' R perfection. I plugged it in, just to check I wasn't ruling something out just because it had no humbuckers. Oh wow. For the first time ever, I had that "I get it" feeling with a guitar. The immediacy of the singe P90, the simplicity of the bridge hardware, that comfortable, slightly skinnier neck. The P90 sound is amazing. Just a bit of extra sizzle and clarity over a HB, but enough balls to be as noisy as I want. I knew it had to be mine. I was spending less than half the money I had intended on, and leaving with a totally different guitar. But it goes to show the reason I will never buy a guitar without playing it first.
