NGD!!! Taylor content...

I got lucky on eBay last week and picked up a Taylor 114CE with a hardshell case for a pretty screamin' good deal - I really like this thing!

I've been giving guitar lessons using my wife's parlor-sized Luna, and while it worked to get the job done, I have a few gripes with it. The Luna played OK but the string spacing was too narrow to accommodate fingerpicking the way I do, and the guitar went out of tune really easily, especially in humidity, which is an issue because three of my students live within a mile of the ocean. Also - the volume characteristics of a Parlor size didn't match well with all the dreadnaughts and electrics my students use - the Luna just didn't project very well.

After doing some research I selected a Taylor 114CE. I almost went for a 214CE but for some reason I liked the tone of the sapele a little bit better and for some reason the neck on every 114 I tried felt just a little more playable than the 214 did, even though both of them play very well and have 1-11/16" nuts. Since this is going to be a "working" guitar, I liked the satin finish as well, I'm not much of a fan of gloss finishes on acoustics anyways - the less finish on an acoustic the better, IMO. My old Seagull had a light Satin finish and that guitar really resonated well, and so does this one.

It's not the most expensive Taylor out there but it really delivers what I need in spades right now. I'd take it to any gig in a second, too. I'm a happy Taylor owner. :D

Re: NGD!!! Taylor content...

How is the action? I like very low action and the Taylors I've played usually had great low action.
Thanks!

I love them Taylors. Got a GA3 which is so basic it's hard to ever put down!
I'm looking for a cheaper electro-acoustic and the 1XX or 2XX series had caught my eyes. Definitely great guitars, and with an utilitarian feel that makes you feel you can abuse them!

It's very nice actually... low enough to be easy to play and high enough to let notes breathe. In other words, perfect. Did you want actual measurements?

Check out the 100 and 200 series models for Taylors, and look ay Seagulls too. The Mini Jumbo Rustic Seagull was my #2 choice, I just got the Taylor because of the neck profile and the raw volume/tone projection. But the Seagulls are no slouch.

I buy any guitar with the intent of using it and I'm generally not scared of wear marks, but the satin finish on this 114 really puts me at ease - I always feel like I'll scratch up a glossy acoustic.

Re: NGD!!! Taylor content...

Good choice. I agree that the 100 and 200 series sound great because of the simplicity, light weight, and less finish and binding etc. They resonate better and feel more alive. Sometimes, the more expensive acoustics are overbuilt and it makes a more blunt sounding tone.

I like that price range with both Taylor and Martin.

I'm gonna agree with you on that. I swear, the more heavy finish there is on an acoustic, the worse the tone gets. I won't touch an acoustic that's painted a solid color. If I can't feel the grain of the wood underneath the paint, that's a red flag for me.

Re: NGD!!! Taylor content...

I love my 414 and I really think that the lower-end ones (1xx and 2xx) are amazing for the money.

Congrats!

Re: NGD!!! Taylor content...

hey, a great choice!
I had a 714CE -- great guitar, but I sold it when I moved to lighten my load ... that body style seems perfect to me for a number of things, and the electronics are a bonus. Are you sure about the nut though? I'm sure my 714 was 1-3/4" ..

If you're interested, you can see pics of my recent Taylor factory tour -- my second one - on my facebook page ...

Also, in the future I'd recommend checking out LA Guitar Sales -- they do a number of custom Taylor and Martin custom orders, besides their other lines.
I have an all mahogany Martin OM-15 from them that is a very affordable, great playing and sounding guitar.

The 114 and the 214 are 1-11/16", the 314 on up are 1-3/4.

I'll check out those pics - I've never gotten the spare time to actually go do that but I want to.
