NGD : Taylor GSmini Koa

I'll be honest; I was never a huge Taylor fan. I know they are very playable and consistent, quality-wise, but I always found them kinda generic. I picked this one off the rack because it looked pretty unique. Big mistake ! The minute I sat down and gave it a strum I knew I had to have it. The koa version of this series is awesome. It's technically a travel guitar, with a 23 1/2" scale, but trust me when I say it sounds huge. These were a limited edition, and are getting more and more scarce, so if you see one be sure to take it for a spin.

I think Taylor make my favourite guitars, hope you enjoy it.
I guess you could say they sound generic, but you could say the same for strats.
The sound of a strat has become so popular it's almost the industry standard and has become 'generic' in itself.
How do you think you'll get on with the short scale, I alway think a parlour style guitar is a great idea but when I try one the scale length feels foreign.
Wouldn't take too long to get used to though I guess

Dude, that is one of the best sounding guitars under $1,000 that I've ever played. A local Guitar Center got one in a while back and a salesman I've bought from quite a bit from came up to me and said I had to try this guitar out. I wish I had bought it–didn't because I was looking at a Fender Blues Jr.

Enjoy that guitar man, it is amazing!

I didn't mean to diss Taylors, it's just that they have a very distinctive almost 'crisp' tone, and I was spoiled growing up because my Dad had a Martin D-28 that sounded out of this world, and raised the bar pretty high for acoustics. I was working on an install at an 'assisted care facility'(aka old folks' home) one day when one of the residents told me to check out his guitar. I pulled the case out of his closet and flipped it open to discover a Gibson J-45 from the 40's. Talk about a magic object ! After playing it for a while, I realized I was ruined and sold my Seagull Maritime CW not long after that. I promised myself I would hold out until I found my own 'magic object' and this little Taylor is definitely it !
The 23 1/2" scale is very easy to get used to; I wish the neck/nut was a tiny bit wider, but it's all proportioned pretty good. I have Fender scale guitars, Gibson scale ones, a 25" PRS and a 27 1/2" baritone so I'm used to switching around. It comes with 13's on it, which actually makes it feel just about perfect and really freaking loud for it's tiny size. I'm pretty sure this particular model is going to hold it's value very well - not that I ever plan on selling it !

Wait till you try something from the 600 or 800 series you'll consider trading up!

Re: NGD : Taylor GSmini Koa

I freakin' love GS Minis. I played a koa too, and it was really nice. My favorite, though, is a cedar one, also limited edition.

I know I will be derided for this, but I really miss my Big Baby. Same 7/8 scale as the Mini, just a bigger body, but still sort of a 7/8 body. Not quite as comfortable to play as the Mini, but the neck's pretty much the same and the sound is almost as good. And this coming from someone who prefers the sound of Gibsons. But I do love the way Taylors play.

Congrats.
