Nickle Plated Humbucker Covers

I won't reply for the Duncan staff but I'll just state that IME*...

-many covers use a copper based plating (unplated covers being the best way to avoid that but a PITA to clean),

-all covers introduce a given amount of eddy currents and alter the resonant peak to some extent,

-covers used by big brands like Duncan or Even Gibson are magnetically transparent enough to make these Foucault currents acceptable or unnoticeable, depending on external factors. Not the same with covers on cheap Asian made PU's and mounted by Epiphone, Ibanez and so on (those being not transparent at all).

*Answer based on aural experience but also regular lab tests, BTW. ;-)

HTH.

Ok. Thanks.

I currently have a set of Throbak covers on the Joe Bonamassa Skinnerburst pickups in my 2014 R8. They do not use a copper base layer under the nickle plating. They have become quite grungy and don't clean up very well. I did not like the "aged" covers that Duncan used on the Skinnerburst pickups so I installed the Throbak covers. However, they have become quite expensive so I'm looking at using the Duncan nickle plated covers. The Duncans are obviously not as accurate in construction compared to the Throbaks but I am interested in whether they use a copper base layer.

So there's no one that knows the answer to my question for sure?

I think it's just that most users won't sand their covers to see what is under the plating... . ;-) Also, that's a question for the Duncan staff : maybe it would be quicker to contact 'em directly?

If I find enough free time to do that and if I don't forget, I'll check from inside a Nickel plated Duncan cover and I'll PM you the result.

I have a Duncan nickel cover on one of my humbuckers and it does get grungy and worn looking. I don't care though. Unsure of it is copper based or not. Definitely a question for Duncan customer service.

I've found that if the nickel cover gets too grungy a quick wipe down with some brasso when I change strings cleans it right up again.

Seymour Duncan has just confirmed that they do use a copper substrate on their humbucker covers under the nickle plating. I have decided to buy another set of Throbak covers.
