nitro frinish

Re: nitro frinish

Wow, those are really reasonable prices for nitro. Looks like there may be more projects for me sooner rather than later......

Re: nitro frinish

the guy who sells on ebay under the "reliablefender" handle (his ebay store is called the stratosphere and he apparently sells a lot of bodies) has a couple of guitar mill bodies for sale and says they're great -- fwiw :smokin:

Really?!

I thought all his stuff was all Fender...good news either way!

Have you heard back from RS yet?

Re: nitro frinish

:smokin: i sent pushpin&poetry a pm asking about it -- and nope, haven't heard from RS, or from USACG for that matter -- because even if i get the guitar mill body, i'm still a bit nervous about getting a neck from them, since necks aren't standard-issue sort of things -- so i would still get the neck from usacg or warmoth, unless i get some very convincing assurances from guitar mill -- which leads me to the thought that wouldn't it be better to get the neck and the body from the same place at the same time...........?

though i would sort of like to get a real fender neck with the decal already on it which makes it seem more authentic - goofy as that may be

Re: nitro frinish

ok - this just in -- i heard from guitar mill - their necks are from allparts -- and i looked at allparts' site and they don't have what i want (medium v, rosewood board, modern radius, i.e., not 7.5) - and what the hell, if i'm gonna have the neck custom made, i might as well get brazilian for the board, if available. so i think i'll be getting the body and neck from usacg, or maybe warmoth if i see what i want in their off the shelf stuff, and then send it to guitar mill for finishing --

Re: nitro frinish

ok -- the word from RS is $450 to paint the body, and $175 for a vintage tint on the neck. Does this strike anyone else as sort of a lot? :onder:

Is that for a solid color finish on the body? Sometimes sunbursts and candy finishes (like candy apple red) cost more.

I don't think the neck price sounds that wacky, but that's not cheap by any stretch, either. Warmoth is charging $105.00 for vintage tint poly ($95 for non-maple fretboards).

it's a lot, but not out of line for nitro ... so the question is if your project is worth it. A lot of their projects are probably vintage guitars or high end custom projects.

the other question you need to ask the nitro finishers is how long will it take ... curing time alone is about 6 weeks.

Seeing that RS does a lot of finih work it must be inline for quite a few guys BUT IMO, that is crazy...maybe if I had a 53 tele that had been painted white with a brush and now needed a refin, but I don't so, thats too high!

that's for a black-red-yellow burst -- i understand that shooting nitro is harder than poly, but does it really justify charging twice what warmoth would charge for a poly finish? i dunno.... but curly's right - if you want it, and that's what it costs, well then that's what you have to pay -- question is, do you want it that bad.... (wait - i thought the question i have to ask myself is do i feel lucky....)

The body seems "a bit" high, but again not out of line for nitro. The neck is just about what I expeced. Here's the way I look at it. Dawn charged us $400 for the body and $200 for the neck on Seymour's tele, and that was a year ago. I'm sure material cost has gone up a touch, and it's harder and harder to spray nitro commercially.

At most, I think the total price may be $75-100 more that what I would consider decent. However, if RS had come back and said $375 for the body and $175 for the neck it would have been a very decent deal. So, is the project worth the extra $100 to you? It would be to me, to recreate the guitar you had, or to just create the best guitar you can for the $$.

To me, I'd pull the trigger and be done with it, and have it just the way I want it. Life is too short.

That's a high price,But not completely out of line. You have to understand that shooting Nitro is labor intensive and time consuming. Nitro is Nasty stuff to work with. Even spraying in a well ventilated area with a good mask your still breathing in a lot of crap.:eek13: I consider Nitro finishes to be for Elite or high end projects. So if you want nitro... You have to pay the Piper. :) A Nitro finish is a specialty item IMO. That's why the price is double a poly finish. Nobody is trying to get rich spraying Nitro. You would be dead from breathing in all the toxins long B4 you could be rolling in the money.:13::chairfall
