Nitro vs. other lacquers on necks

I picked up 2 cans of deft clear wood finish at my local hardware store. I got one can of Gloss which explicitly states "Cellulose Nitrate" and accidentally got a second can of semi-gloss instead of gloss.

Semi-gloss has a rather different composition as listed on the can. Instead of Cellulose Nitrate, it lists a "Proprietary Soya Alkyd Polymer".
Huh, that's not what Deft's site's MSDS say should be in aerosol cans of semi-gloss.

Well it's still a lacquer, but does anyone know if it's cool to use on my guitar's neck, over the gloss?

If I don't want it really shiny can I just not polish it very hard?

if you don't want it really shiny then i would just use a little bit of the nitro...seriously a couple of coats and that's it...forget about that other can, get your money back if possible.

fender necks feel their best once most of the finish has rubbed off anyway...might as well start with less.

Sweet. I got a few coats on there now. It's getting kinda shiny already and it actually looks pretty good that way! The wood isn't too light and so i never felt the need to throw any amber on there. anyways I've never actually owned a fender gloss neck and wasn't sure about them, so I'll leave it gloss for the time being and if I don't like it I'll wetsand it with some fine sandpaper a bit.

Now I just gotta wait til it cures. Reranch recommends 5 days minimum. Does that sound about right?

hah -- whoever recommended that at ReRanch probably has more refin experience than this whole forum collectively. i'd follow their advice man...better to wait longer than you have to than not long enough righ?

5 days absolute minimum. If you only have a few coats on there then i would wait 5-10 days. If i nitro finish a guitar body then i will usually wait 30-60 days before buffing it out. Nitro takes a long time to properly cure.

Yup, best to wait as long as you can stand.

I not only use them for polishing nuts and saddles, but for finish touch ups, and last night to put a semi-gloss finish on the back of a neck. Still a good amount of shine, but better than a high gloss. And the fact that they're cloth, and not paper or a cloth backed mesh, they're very very easy to work with. I like them a lot. I'm waiting for someone to send me a refinish or something, cause I really wanna try 'em for something else other than drop fills and ding repairs on finishes.
