Hey guys,

I would like to buy a noise gate pedal.

I've read reviews on harmony central and past threads on here and so far ive found that....

1. Most people go with the ISP Decimator
2. Most people dont like the MXR smartgate
3. Alot of people that like the NS-2 still prefer the ISP
4. Alot of people say The HUSH pedal is total garbage.

Is there anything that is on par with the ISP that i should check out?

Re: Noise gate pedals

I haven't used anything else other than the Boss NS2. I think it is a great unit if you absolutely need a noise gate (provided it is set up right - not too hard). I recommend it, solid unit. These days i dont use so much gain so i dont use it. If however i need a noise supressor ill go back to it without hesitation. I have heard good things about the ISP unit, but no experience myself. I'll let others chime in on that one.

Re: Noise gate pedals

What are you trying to do really? If you want to get rid of Amp hiss and such, I've been using the Hush Pedal to very good effect. You just need to have the amp driving the pedal at the correct impedence. In My case, I need to have my 5150's post gain on 5, run it into various effects, then into the hush, and then I add a volume control to bring it down to listenable levels again.

If you want to get rid of Guitar buzz and feedback, the Boss NS-2 is pretty good, I've never really heard the ISP decimator, but the rack model is pretty intense.

Re: Noise gate pedals

Rocktron makes the best noise gate.

Re: Noise gate pedals

The ISP decimator is pretty amazing.

I've had mine for a little over a year now and been using it alot. Doesn't rob sustain or tone and it shuts inteligently.

Re: Noise gate pedals

Does plugging the NS-2 into the effects loop subtle the effect at all?? I like the pedal but it sucks sustain from my lower output guitars. I have the first know all the way to the right and the second all the way to the left, this seems to be the most minimal setting . . . unless I'm wrong??

Re: Noise gate pedals

ISP Decimator.. I've owned the Boss NS-2 and had the Rockman SmartGate (same as the MXR SmartGate) and I prefered the ISP Decimator over all of them.

Infact, I even went and baught the Rack version of the ISP ProRackG and selling the pedal. Interested? :D

hahaha.. well, the rackmount version is obviously alot more expensive.

The advantages it has is that it has 2 Noise gates in there, which can either work seperate or work with each other. The unit has the Threshold control same as the pedal. But the Rackmount has the whats called "Filter Tracking", which is to filter hiss/noise caused by certain highend frequencies.

What you do is you play a bright sounding cord (like an A) and adjust the "Filter Tracking" until your tone starts to loss highend, then you just bring it back a little bit and that fixes that.

The Rackmount version also has the nice feature of being able to choose between Line (+4dbu) and Instrument (-10dbu) levels. i didnt find the Pedal to handle Line level as good as the Rackmount. but again, it is a pedal, which takes -10dbu input signal.

The way I have it hooked up is:
- Guitar
- Axess Bs-2
- Dunlop Crybaby
- MXR Microamp
- ISP Channel A Input
- ISP Channel A Output
- ADA MP-1 3TM Input
- ADA MP-1 3TM Output
- ISP Channel B Input
- ISP Channel B Output
- Rocktron Replifex Input
- Rocktron Replifex Output
- VHT 2502
- VHT 412 Cab

the rig is totally quiet, even with the guitar volume turned up all the way and not muting the strings. The unit is very tranparent. I didnt notice any tone loss between the unit in the signal chain or out of it.

The other thing I REALLY liked was it i am able to use the same settings on the ISP (Both channels) I use with my Highgain sounds on to use with my clean sounds. and trust me.. there is no sustain cut or tone muted at all. It lets everything ring and fade out naturally as a guitar would without a noise gate. Even with highgain sounds, I can actully hit a chord, let it sustain and be able to get "natural" feedback from my tone without the ISP affecting or doing anything. As soon as I mute the strings, everything is dead quiet.

Hope that helps

Cheers

Re: Noise gate pedals

Sounds fantastic dude, I thought a noisegate that powerfull and that guitar player/user friendly would never happen. Man, I really want a rack version, but its pricey, but after this i know I will get a rack one, but at the same time I need a noisegate as my line is a bit noisy, how is the pedal in the loop, and how much tone suckage does it do when its infront of the amp? Thanks Duke.

When I was using the Pedal, I had it after my MXR Microamp.. so my chain went:

Guitar
Wah
MXR
ISP
Rack

It cleaned up noise that was created in the pre-preamp levels. and to be honest, i didnt and never noticed any affect on the tone. When i compared it to the Boss Ns-2, I noticed that the Boss Ns-2 sucked a bit of the lowend out, leaving the tone thin and sometimes sounded harsh. with the ISP, it never affected my tone.

yes.. the rack version is pricy, but to me.. it was a well worth investment and worth every penny. :)

Cheers bro!
