Noise gates. What's your favourite?

Hey there,

I thought I'd make a topic and get an insight into what everyone regards as their favourite noise gate pedals. I've got a boss NS2 at the minute and it seems to hold up well live but tends to slightly cut of some sustain. Apart from that its a pretty little pedal that I see myself using for a little while longer :) How about you all?

Re: Noise gates. What's your favourite?

What works for me, strange enough, is the Line 6 Constrictor pedal. Built in Noise Gate and a compressor. See where I am going with this???? I can dial in the sustain and dial out the noise. It is actually pretty effective. I have a few compressors and find this one, the cheapest of the bunch, does the job really well. It beats the Joe Meek....Dare I say..... and my Double Back (Sorry SD, the Constrictor just works for me). So back to the noise gate issue cutting your sustain..... yea that! Maybe find a compressor to even things out a bit.

my decimator Gstring is perfect for me! I like dirt, so that means I have a really noisy rig

Re: Noise gates. What's your favourite?

The NS-2 is a perfectly good pedal. I don't use any noise gate/suppressor pedals at all though because my pickups (Blackouts) are super effective at reducing hum/noise.
The ISP is better, but IMO not enough so that it's worth spending far more than what you can get a NS-2 for. If you can find an ISP cheap, get it, but otherwise stick with your NS-2

MXR for me. Tried them all and this is the only one that doesn't screw with my tone. If I'm playing a song that needs me to ride the volume pot a lot , I turn it off because only then can it affect sustain.

Decimator G String. It's the only one I've tried that I feel is "transparent," and the four jack setup gives you many options for hookup.

I use an old rocktron hush, when they were still made in the US. It has 2 threshold knobs and a foot switch to select between them as well as an on/off.

I have use a few boss ns2's and an old rocktron hush rack mount, even a newer style single switch hush pedal, but I always go back to the old one. Maybe someday I'll get a decimator.

Without any kind of doubt: ISP Decimator G-String.

Here a demo video about what can the regular decimator do and what the G-string does.

Re: Noise gates. What's your favourite?

MXR Smart Gate. I've tried a bunch of different ones, and that seems to be the best for me.

NS-2 for me. I use all 4 jacks. Guitar to Input>send to dirt boxes>receive from dirt boxes>output to next in chain.
Love it.
No tone suck and seems to add just a tad of level.

Re: Noise gates. What's your favourite?

for recording I turn off extraneous electrical appliances, lights, wifi, bluetooth, make sure nobody's using a microwave, then use a line conditioning wall wart, and then an ISP Decimator.

Re: Noise gates. What's your favourite?

I like a Decimator in front, and when needed, I use a NS-2 in the loop of some amps.

Re: Noise gates. What's your favourite?

I also use an expensive furman power conditioner for pure tone and amp safety from bad currents at gigs with bad power cause they plugged in too much into their power lines for their PA and lighting etc: http://www.furmansound.com/product.php?div=01&id=P-1800PF

I note that there are some amp heads that have noisegates built in: peavey and marshall do this
