noisey ass pup. help?

Wazzup everyone. I just got a SSl-1 for the neck pup in my tele to go with the dimarzio fast track 2 that was already in the bridge when i got it. Now..i had a reliable tech install ths ssl-1 and it has SO much noise that a gate can barely hold it back when i have my dist on. Not as noisey when i touch the strings. I had another tech check it out he said ground was fine and that the pup is just supposed to be noisey. Any ideas? Thanx

Does this happen with the other pickup too, or just the SSL-1? Single coils will hum to a certain extent, but they should not be so noisy that they are unusable. It still sounds like a ground problem somewhere, I would check to make sure the bridge has been grounded properly.

No, the bridge pup has zero noise. In the middle postion w/ both pups going, the noise is as bad as just the ssl-1 in neck. So i should check and see if the BRIDGE pup is grounded properly?

The Fast Track is a humbucker....right? The SSL-1 isn't...so it hums.

Welcome to the world of vintage style Strat pickups. :)

If you can't live with the hum, you need to get a mini-humbucker like the Duckbucker or Cool Rails or Vintage Rails or Classic Stack or Little '59 instead.

Yea, i am aware that a single coil is not as quiet as a humbucker. 60 cycle hum and blah blah. But...this seems a bit excessive. I have a few strats and NONE of those hum like this. Its gotta be a ground issue somewhere. Or maybe my SSL-1 is saying "you better get that F*#@ing Dimarzio crap outta here". hehehe. Anyways, is there a way to quiet it (if its not a ground prob)?

Or maybe the SD is crying because the DMZ is kicking it's butt! See even humorously meant things can cause problems ... It helps to stick to the facts only when troubleshooting. Now, back to the problem...
It really depends, a) how well shielded is *this guitar* as your others have nothing to do with it, b) how close are you to your amp, as a single coil close to an amp or other elecrical interference with be a hum magnet in itself, also SC s also pick up a lot of upper frequenct hash as well. High gain only intensifies the issue c) the enviroment that you're in electrically as well as how clean your power is. I'd check over all those first ...
If a direct A/B comparision, with the same amp, and settings, same outlet, and same playing situation (ie, distance from the amp, other instruments, facing of direction, etc.) yield resultls that point to that guitar, well then it's something in that guitar ... a lot of people tend to notice problems that have always been there but seem new or greatly exaggerated due to a specific new situation. Only thing you can do is to check over the wiring, A/B it. To me it sounds like a noraml single coil under high gain put in close proximity to the amp or other interference source. Check shielding, move anyway from the amp, change directions, and if you want any hope of being humcancelling in when combined with a humbucker you must split the HB.

Re: noisey ass pup. help?

Not being familiar with Dimarzio pickups, I didn't realize the other pickup was a humbucker. In that case, it's most likely a ground problem with the pickup. If the other pickup works without any noise, you can rule out a bad bridge ground.

I would suggest shielding the electronics cavities with some shielding tape...it's pretty inexpensive, and it can cut back on the hum quite a bit. Star grounding is also a good idea, but that would require another visit to a tech if you're not familiar with soldering. Check out www.guitarnuts.com, and take a look at the wiring and shielding section.

Re: noisey ass pup. help?

thanx so much for all the help. I took one of the pup covers from a set of texas specials im not using and put it on the ssl-1. Helped ALOT. I kinda thought that being able to see the coil on my pup prob wasnt good. heheh. Those techs should have known better. Shame on them.
