Noobish Question....

Hey all....

Being a noob in the guitar building world, I have a question for you, which may sound quiet stupid...

Basically, I have my guitar kit, and I have a tonepros vintage wraparound bridge, and a pre-drilled kit... With the bridge studs, the bushings? (Gold parts with which the studs screw into) seem like quiet a tight fit for the pre-drilled holes, to the point where I would really have to force them in...

I know a tight fit is desirable, but I don't like the idea of really forcing the bushings in... I mean, the holes look like their drilled to the right depth, but I really can't afford to mess this up!

To get to the point, do I push them in with a bit of force, or am I thinking wrong?

Thanks all!!

Re: Noobish Question....

I´ve never used anything but a hammer, it´s what I was taught to do 20 years ago, and it still works. 1 Shot, One Bushing. :laugh2:

They´re supposed to fit tight as a dolphin´s ass, because they´re not supposed to come out and do have to deal with quite a bit of tension. That´s why you need a hammer to get them in there.

And, yes, it can also be done with a drill press, vise, or other slow-as-hell-but-not-one-bit-better "pressing" method for all the pansies out there that don´t know how to protect the finish or can´t use a hammer to save their life. ;)

Re: Noobish Question....

Generally speaking, they should be a tight fit. You shouldn't be able to press them in with just finger pressure. A shop will have a press to do this, but you can do it with a soft faced mallet to tap them in. CAUTIONARY NOTE: You need to take real care to ensure the go in absolutely straight. If you go in skewed, you WILL damage the wood below.

Re: Noobish Question....

One trick that will help. Put the busings in the freezer for 45 to 60 minutes. They will srink some but still be tight.

Oh wow, thanks everyone!! You've put my mind at ease!!

Zerberus, you seem to know a bit about these things, although, i'm a bit worried about the dolphin thing.... hahah!

Chris, as much as i'd love to have someone else do it, this is part of a project in which I need to do almost everything myself... also, thanks for the hint about making sure to fit them in straight....

Grenade, sounds good, thanks for the tip!

Alright everyone, expect a build thread quite a way in the future!!

Re: Noobish Question....

I always use a hammer. BUT...always protect the bushing with a piece of wood (short dowel) so you don't get hammer marks/dents on it. And so you don't accidently hit the guitar with the hammer.
