NOS Tube Shoot out !!!

Ok –

This shootout is meant to be twofold. One, so you can all hear the amazing things Jeff Seal did to my JCM 800 2205 circuit, and to test the NOS Pre-Amp tubes that I have recently acquired, along with two I have had for about 6 months. The cleans on this amp are amazing.

I will only be testing 3 tubes in V1, as the NOS GE Greyplate I have was selected for its outstanding clean quality will always be in V2. The phase inverter is a modern EH12AX7 with balanced triodes I just picked up, because the JJ was too dark with the new amp voicing. I also picked up a vintage 60’s Rayethon tube, but it is noisy right out of the box, so I’ll have to send that one back. Whichever tube I am not testing will be in V4 just for a reference point.

The tubes I will be testing in V1 are as follows, and the clips will be in this order.

1. Amprex/Bugle Boy – 1960’s vintage NOS.
2. RCA Blackplate – 1958 Vintage NOS
3. RTF NOS – Vintage German 12AX7 (this tube was recommended by Mike at KCA
for my JCM 800 prior to the mods)

I will be playing a short clean riff, a “classic rock” riff with the gain set at “4”, a hard rock riff with the gain at “7” and an all out riff with the gain set at “10”. Perhaps I’ll do a clean shootout later just changing the pre-amp tube in V2. I’ll make the clips short and sweet, and as consistent as possible.

Here’s a quick rundown of the amp settings….I won’t change them for each tube. Guitar is my Dean Hardtail. Clean clips use the neck pickup, dirty clips use the bridge pup. Both pups are APH II’s, the bridge is wound slightly hot at 8.43k…the neck is stock. Volume and tone on full. There are no effects on these recordings with the exception of the “You Really Got Me” clips. It just doesn’t sound right without a little reverb, so I added that after recording. Everything else is dry and straight from the amp…as to give the closest possible comparison.

Clean – Treble 8
Mids – 5 (yes, mid setting on a JCM 2205, installed by Jeff Seal, no addl holes)
Bass - 9
Channel Volume – 2
Master Volume – 5
Reverb - 3

OD – Treble – 8
Mids – 6
Bass – 9
Channel Volume – 7
Master Volume – 7
Reverb – 1.5

NOS Pre-Amp Shootout Clip

Let me know which one you like...then I'll let you know which one I prefer.

When I click on it it goes right to my soundclick page. Try the link in my sig.

Re: NOS Tube Shoot out !!!

It's kind of hard to tell with my crappy little speakers and I had to go lo fi too [dial up], but that's a bitchin' amp Jeff. I guess I gotta go with Bugle Boys, that's what I have in my 2204. Seemed a tad more articulate balls to the wall, but again, it's kinda hard to tell.

Dude...you live at Lake Norman??? I'm about 5 exits south of you off Harris Blvd and 77. Right off Harris and Mallard Creek! Screw the clips...come over and play it for yourself!

Re: NOS Tube Shoot out !!!

I know the area well, might have to take you up on that, you in the book? I'm just off 16 in Lincoln County.

Re: NOS Tube Shoot out !!!

Here's my take on the clips...

Bugle Boy
Nice warm tone. Very detailed. Great mids. Highs not as pronounced.

RCA
Very glassy, "bell" like ringing. Less bass response. Greater emphasis on upper mids than Bugle Boy.

RTF
After hearing the clip I have to agree with the recommendation to use this tube in your 2204.
Perfect balance of all frequencies. More mids than the Bugle Boy. Sounds best to my ear for clean and OD sounds.

Re: NOS Tube Shoot out !!!

Thanks Jeff! I've done that test too. The tubes I prefered in my Marshall JCM 800 2203 were the old RCA long Blackplate followed by the short gray plate. Fattest, strongest, richest tone, IMO.

Re: NOS Tube Shoot out !!!

It won't play for me at work....I'll have to try it at home, but FWIW, I loved the "RFT"s in my Marshall. They clean up or O/D nicely for blues/classic rock.

Which do YOU like best????

Re: NOS Tube Shoot out !!!

I'd have to say the RTF was best to my ears. There was just something I didn't like about the RCA.

Re: NOS Tube Shoot out !!!

As far as the recordings go....I like the RCA first, followed by the RTF, followed by the Bugle Boy. The recordings fail to capture all of the subtle nuances of each tube. In person so far I belive I like the Bugle Boy, RCA and then the RTF in that order.

All of these have their plus's and minuses...I think I like the BB best for the AC/DC tone, the RCA for the VH tone, and the RTF for the "maxed gain tone".

Late last night I did some more switching, and think I have found my new combo for now. Bugle Boy V1, RCA V2, RTF V3, GE Greyplate V4 and EH PI slot. I really need to experiment with the PI slot to see what effect these tubes have on the overall tone.

This makes sense based on what Jeff Seal told me about the function of each tube's role in the chain....some of you might find this interesting, I know I did. I hope Jeff doesn't mind me posting this:

"V1a is first gain stage for clean channel. V1b is first gain stage for OD. V2a is second gain stage for clean, V2b is second gain stage for OD.

V3a is third gain stage for OD, V3b is final gain stage for everything and is post effects loop. (driving the OD channel with the Volume control maxed actually Od's this stage quite nicely...not MV, just OD channel volume control...i'm pretty sure you already knew this. The reason..."crosstalk" between V3a and V3b actually resonates the entire tube.... not sure if Marshall actually designed it this way on purpose or not but it's quite effective)

V4 is reverb only

V5 is PI...you can use anything you want here so long as both sides are the same i.e 12Ax7, T7 or U7... tubes like the 12DW7 which basically is a 12Ax7 on the first (a) side and a 12Au7 for the second (b) side work great for preamp selection so long as you follow the layout above, but not in the PI slot."

Re: NOS Tube Shoot out !!!

Puckboy -

That was a great site, and great reviews....thanks.

I think I've decided to stick strictly with NOS valves for now. I'm going to order the following...I've found sites with some pretty good prices. I'm also going to see if I can pick up some more of those RCA Blackplates...they seem to do well in my V2 slot.

RFT - $30
Tungstram - $25
Siemens - $35

I also found a guy who sell tubes that are used NOS, but test new.

Telefunken - $60
Mullard - $40

I may give a few of these a whirl also. I can't really explain why I'm so taken with the NOS tubes, maybe I'm buying into the hype? It just seems that time and time again when new production tubes are tested agains't NOS, the NOS just outperforms. If you can get an average of 5000 hours out of a NOS tube, and 10000 out of some of the Mullards and Tele's....I won't have to buy a whole bunch to have a long, long supply.

Who knows...I'm probably just throwing good money after bad with the level at which I play....but I guess that's one of the things that freedom offers...the right to make not the smartest choices..but the ones that make you feel the best.
