Not happy with single coil noise level

I have a G&L Legacy with the original Alcino 5 single coils and, don’t get me wrong, they sound great. But the noise level of these pick ups is really a pain and I’m wondering if there’s soemthing I can do to fix it or if I should get Fender noiseless pups or hum-canceling Duncans that will still give me a vintage single coil tone.

Re: Not happy with single coil noise level

Forum knowledge has me recommending the new Duncan Classic Stack Plus but i'm sure somebody who actually knows what they're talking about will be on soon.

Yep...the new Classic Stack Plus pickups will get rid of the hum and give you killer vintage "'62 Strat" tone. I'm a G&L dealer now, BTW, and G&L has agreed to build me a Lew's Guitars version of the Legacy with the new Duncan Stack Plus Pickups. Cn't wait to hear it! Lew

That should be killer! Will it then be . . . the G&L LGL? :)

I dunno what the designation will be, but I spoke with my Duncan rep and G&L rep (Harry Warman) on tuesday and I'll be placing my opening order just as soon as I sign the lease on my new store up in Nederland. Should be just a few more days and then I can make the commitment...we've been hammering out the details of the lease with my new landlord for a few weeks now...she's nice but tough! Lew

Re: Not happy with single coil noise level

Does that guitar have copper shielded cavities AC coupled to a star ground? I'd try that route before swapping pickups. Read up on shielding at www-dot-guitarnuts-dot-com.

I recently went the shielding route with my single coil Strat and it definitely cut the noise picked up from my fluorescent lights and incandescent light dimmers and computer. If it's still not quiet enough, then look at noise cancelling pickups. The time and effort spent on shielding won't be wasted, because it will still be lowering the noise floor no matter which pickups go in.

Sheilding would definately help. Made a difference to my Legacy.
