JHS just released their Dumble In A Box, continuing their line of DIY pedals. Makes you wonder how much money they save by not assembling it.

I'll admit it looks very cool. It sounds very cool too on the clips. Am I gonna get one? Probably not. I have given up on impulse purchases. My Notaklon that I bought was pretty cool, but I don't use it. This would fall into the same category.

I watched the video. It sounds cool, but I have other pedals that do something similar. Good price, though, and it might get more people interested in electronics.

Just put mine together (10 minutes) and gave it a whirl. There's some X factor mojo going on like I get from my Origin pedals. For about a C note this thing's a deal.

not surprised it sounds good. ten minutes eh? so its snap things in place and no solder?

@ Jeremy Yeah. 10 minutes. 14 if you don't read the instructions. And I've now had some time with this thing. Serious MOJO going on. There's a what I think of as "swirl". It's an ineffable quality that's hard to describe but I think activity is a good word to describe it.

on both clean and dirty or ? i know josh made it so the two options are not footswitchable on purpose, but seems like that would be a cool option

If I can get one at the 5pm restock I might do that, just to test out a pedal-in-a-box->IR-2 cab sim->Laptop signal path.

I couldn't tell much of a difference in the shootout except for gain levels, so I feel this is probably marketing as much as anything.

Yeah, I don't know if this was a proper mistake, pure marketing genius, or both LOL!

"OMG, we f'd up! Quick, buy the limited release of the f'd up version before it's gone forever! Oh, and be sure to start saving for the V2 model, also!"

Smart...

That said, the swapped circuits sounded 98% identical with the existing one having possibly a hint more gain (2%).

Yeah, I've been researching it and the dirty channel looks to be based on either a Zen Drive or an SOV-2 and the clean channel is essentially just a clean boost that's been given a healthy dose of mythos from the fact that it was designed by Dumble.

Josh's rambling about how fine tuned Mr. Dumble's desired sound was, when refering to how two flat frequency boosts sound similar, was kinda silly.

Who knows what was in Dumbles head when he made the BBC-1 and later “A Box Later”. Its seems quite likely though that Dumble wanted to improve on the BBC-1 with the “A Box Later”. Based on Josh comparing the two tones, I preferred the BBC-1, but that’s because it sounded a little more colored/fat.

I just watched this... I'm not the market for this pedal but the process is interesting to me. I like Josh's videos. This is kind of a long haul. He talks about the idea of "saving money by not assembling it" near the end. FWIW.

i love how josh keeps being so honest and open about things. i like some of his stuff and dont love others, but i appreciate his work

I love Professor Josh and his videos, and all the pedal history and knowledge he has. But this was a s—t show by any measure on this notadümblë rollout. He is doing a masterful job of keeping a lid on what would otherwise be a fair amount of disappointment. Imagine if another pedal maker had the same set of circumstances; they’d be upside down on a crucifix somewhere rn. Some interesting math in that video. To get to his quoted failure rate on notadümblë of just over 2%, he’s including thousands of unshipped units (?), and keep in mind many of the shipped units are still sitting in boxes not yet assembled by the customer.

Well, if you're gonna botch something on so many levels, I suppose it's best to be open about it!

These videos are also raking in the views ($$$) and serving as marketing for the company ($$$). Other content creators are also talking about these vids, so that's even more exposure for the company...Well played, Josh!
