Re: Now this is freaking tempting....

I think we can all agree it would look better with covered pickups, but it does look like a pretty neat axe. I dig how they manage to make an AAA top look understated. I'm assuming from the literature it's got the APH2 in both positions.

All the slash marketing is really getting annoying, he must be desperately broke

I keep expecting the man to come out with Signature Shoelaces or Slash's Choice Bathroom Tissue

You think that's bad, you should see how many guitars that Les Paul guy has his name on.

He only got royalties of $1 per guitar. And then he pulled out when they tried to slap his name on the SG, because it wasn't an instrument he was involved with.

...we don't really get honest guys like that anymore. Nowadays it's all the more "money don't smell" routine.

That $1 per guitar (~$10 adjusted for inflation) he got kept adding up until his 3rd renewal on his contract (he needed to re-agree to the deal every five years) when him and his wife were about to divorce. She could make a claim on his agreement with Gibson, so he didn't renew it. It was less of him being honest and more of him not wanting his ex wife to have more money.

You may think that such low royalties were because of him trying to keep the price down, but it was really because all LP did for the LP was design the tail piece and suggest a mahogany cap with a maple body (which was reversed by McCarty to save weight). He was mostly played for his name.

Re: Now this is freaking tempting....

Kinda cool that they went with the Banjo tuners but Epiphone maybe should have gone all the way with a neck thru.

Re: Now this is freaking tempting....

Here we are a year later. I just bought one on closeout for $599. From what I've read, and having closely gone over the specs, I expected to be impressed. And I am. Not surprisingly for an upper end EPI, it is pretty impressive. And spec-wise there is surprisingly very little difference between it and the Gibson Slash Firebird, including the neck and body construction. For about $7000 less. I don't hold any value for the Slash connection, but it is a great sounding and playing axe.

Now, I dont associate Slash with Firebirds, but this is a cool looking and featured axe...

Epi Firebird, but has Duncan Slash pups and Orange drop caps..

****this is not just a firebird with a slash association.. It has a different make up.. (People mentioned the glued in neck)
In this interview with slash about the guit, sounds like he was designing a Firebird shaped Les paul..

That's where there is a real question to me now that I have it. It is not an Old Firebird sound. It is not a new Firebird sound. Not sure it is purely an LP sound either. I'll have to play it more to understand that better. Like them or not, here's a clip with at least an idea of how it sounds:

Yes. The actual SD Slash pups.

No, we can't agree. Exposed pups look totally right to me.

No, not starting at $599. And it would not be the same, and arguably not even better.

Kinda cool that they went with the Banjo tuners but Epiphone maybe should have gone all the way with a neck thru.

That was my feeling too when I saw it was a glued-on neck.
Al
No, they did go "all the way" because the Gibson Slash Firebird has the same neck set.

Re: Now this is freaking tempting....

I may be thinking of a different guitar, but thought I tried one once and it had a baseball bat neck, grabbed it, felt that and put it back on the wall. Love the look of a Firebird but not that much. But at 599, if it werent for the neck Id look harder at it. I had an Epi LP years ago, sounded great, had a few quality issues, tuner screws were crooked, pickup selector was missing the cap and couldnt find one that fit properly BUT it screamed, esp after I put a pair of some unknown Dimarzios in it. Giant yellow gold flake, gawd aweful ugly but was strangely attracted to it.

Re: Now this is freaking tempting....

Happy to hear that it is a cool guitar. The business of artist endorsees is a big one, and the deals vary by artist to artist. But no doubt, that like in everything else, a famous person sells product. The business of artist guitars is a strange one though, as the final product is rarely exactly what the artist uses. They set a price, and build to that. So a bunch of artist quirks won't make it in because it won't appeal to a mass audience, and it is too expensive. Always interesting to me.

Re: Now this is freaking tempting....

I almost ordered that one. Ultimately decided against it because I wanted something that would be comfortable to play sitting down.

Re: Now this is freaking tempting....

Yes. The actual SD Slash pups.

they said aph1 neck and aph2 bridge which i think would be an awesome combo but the slash pups are aph2 n& b. the aph1 is the a2p, the aph2 is the hotter/newer slash version. i think the old neck with the new bridge might be badass. glad you dig the guitar! always loved firebirds and if i wasnt going old school fbv id love something like the one you grabbed

Of course. That is what makes it a tough sell (literally), no matter how good it is. You won't get it to sound like a Firebird. So what is it? It is an enigma. So it doesn't have an identity, one could say. It is really cool, really good. But it leaves me scratching my head a bit. But you get over it when you play it. Especially through a Marshall JVM410HJS!
