NP(s)D - Overdrives

So got some pedals that I bought off ebay in the post today.
A NUX Overdrive (Tubescreamer Clone)

and a Toadworks Leo Jr.

I only got to play them at medium levels for a little while tonight but here is what I have so far.

NUX -
On opening I noticed its a cheap made pedal it feels really light and cheaply made (makes my Joyo pedals seem more like boss by comparison) but its a $30 chinese build so not much expected here.
Sound wise its how I expect a tubescreamer to sound a little loss of bass a little nasally although i never have owned a tubescreaner, probably not alot of use at the cleaner low volume setting I was using in a band environment at loud volumes I expect it to be a more useful but kinda ok nothing great.

Toadworks -
Still fairly light pedal but alot more proffesional looking and feeling then the NUX, its simple with two controls which is kinda nice for a change (I tend to like lots of options). Plugged it in and a massive grin goes on my face, sounds exactly how I expect a dirty fender to sound with plenty of touch response, instant blues pedal. Higher gain settings arent as sweet but are kinda cool still (I prefer marshall sounds for actual distortion) I found about 12 0 clock the best balance. Sounded good with my tele but awesome with my Jaguar (most dirt pedals sounds kinda **** with my jag) and suddenly things like the treble cut and the rythmn circuit made a big difference. Overall pretty cool pedal and nothing like any of my other pedals. One problem is that with a battery there is a lot of white noise hiss that goes up and down with the level control (gain doesnt really affect it) and with a power supply (BBE Supa Charger) there is also a power hum that goes along with the hiss (also changes depending on volume control). Makes the dynamics of the pedal less useful with such a high noise floor.

I will hopefully do some clips of them tomorrow at proper band volumes

Re: NP(s)D - Overdrives

your comments point out something about our PERCEPTION of objects in general ... items that are heavier and feel more "substantial" might have psychological advantage for some folks ... of course, there may be a practical advantage with pedals, if someone is really hard on things

one of my favorite tubescreamers is the little green Maxon OD808 ... it has a great tone, although it's very lightweight ... sometimes I wonder if some players think it might not hold up on the road. At the same time, I see a movement among DIY and smaller pedal builders towards very compact builds... as if some players are very conscious now of footprint size. The fact is, the circuit board itself weighs very little ... most of the weight is in the enclosure itself.

Yeh definately I guess its more that the metal enclosures are alot lighter then one would expect and people relat light metal to something like an aluminium can which is easily crushed vs a steel can which is not. Compact is different I have a few Mooer pedals and they can fit anywhere which is great but somehow they seem fairly solid (somehow in my head..).
