NPD: Black Winter in Jackson SL2H

I installed the Black Winter bridge pickup into my SL2H and I think it's the best pickup I've had in this guitar so far. I originally had the stock JB in the bridge, and switched it out for a TB-5 Custom. The JB had an annoying mid-range honk that I couldn't dial out, and lacked clarity, while not being as tight as I would like. I liked the Custom better than the JB, but it was still not exactly what I wanted. The custom was borderline harsh and had a lot of fizz on the top end and lacked clarity. Clean tones with the Custom were not very good either (they were worse than with the JB).

I haven't had a lot of time with the Black Winter thus far, but it is an excellent fit for my SL2H. The clean tones are fantastic. There is a lot of low end, more than both the JB and the Custom, but it is still very clear and tight. The highs and mids are pretty even, and not overly bright or harsh. Note separation is great when playing chords, and single notes are very present and thick. I currently have my SL2H tuned to Drop C and there is no issue at all holding up to that tuning. It feels like it would hold up lower than that without an issue.

I still have the SD '59 in the neck, and the Black Winter pairs well with it. I'm tempted to try the Black Winter neck pickup as well (mainly because I like the pickups to match, and the font difference kind of bugs me). I really like the '59 though, and haven't seen a lot of talk about the Black Winter neck pickup.

I'll make some clips soon and post an update to this thread when I do.

The black winter neck pickup is truly fantastic as well. It really pairs nicely with the bridge. I have my sets in Black Walnut, and Black Limba. (Just now noticed that the pickups and the woods have the same adjective.) I find it works well in both, with IMO, the edge going with the black limba SG. If you like the 59, I would keep it, but then again, if you do decide to change, I don't think you would be disappointed.

Looking forward to some audio. I'm going to have to look into look into the BW because I haven't found anything in the Duncan line as far as a high-output ceramic that I really like so I've been perusing the Bareknuckle website a lot lately trying to figure out which set to buy.

I've done a fair amount on research on Bare Knuckle and conclude the Nail Bomb (b)/Cold Sweat (n) is probably the combo for me. The very helpful rep at BK told me the same combo after I described my goals (I didn't tell him I was already favoring that combo). Too bad they are so pricey hard to find, but I am tempted to try them in the near future.

Re: NPD: Black Winter in Jackson SL2H

I put a BW set in my SL2H as well and couldn't be happier. They are flat our great pick ups.

Re: NPD: Black Winter in Jackson SL2H

You could always remove the font from the 59 or try the BW neck. Im kinda picky that way too and understand what you are saying.
Thanks for theBW review. when they first came out, I feared they would be to genre specific, but it seems they are pretty well liked accross the board

Yeah, despite the name they are extraordinarily versatile.

Nice clips. What color is your SL2H?

Re: NPD: Black Winter in Jackson SL2H

It's a fairly unique color called Interference Fireglow. The color changes depending on how the light hits it. It goes through the spectrum of warm colors.
