NPUD: Goodbye 490/498

Re: NPUD: Goodbye 490/498

Hoping for a whole lotta awesome!

Got a couple of gift certificates for Xmas. Thought I'd try these out, heard so much good about them here and on MLP. I'm not actually a 490/498 hater, they have some neat tones. But they were just okay, if you know what I mean.

I've got Seths in my LP Standard, which gives me great classic tones. Thought I'd put the WLH's in my Studio and turn it into my rock machine. I'll report back post surgery. Seymour's never disappointed me yet, so I'm pretty confident these'll work out.

Happy New Year, all!

Re: NPUD: Goodbye 490/498

I think you'll be happy, I've got a set in my 1990 studio and I love them, if I had a complaint the neck pickup is a little too powerful for me, but there are a ton of different tones to be had with a twist of the volume knob and it cleans up really well that way. I think I'm probably in the minority with that complaint however, and I love the huge singing lead tone you can get with the neck pickup on full blast. I've got my neck pickup adjusted down about level with the pickup ring and it's still plenty fat. Enjoy your new set, I like the nickel neck and zebra bridge!!!

Excellent choices! Those are a couple of Seymour's best, and a level above anything Gibson offers.

I have the 490R/498T set in one of my guitars. For me, a little too compressed/squishy/muddy although they were an upgrade to what was in there before. WLH, I think, are the ideal pup for someone who wants a little more output without losing clarity/definition.

Basic Black, with WLH's…clean, mean, simple….rock hard Vo!!!

Needs to be in a two LP band...would pair well with a three pickup 70s cherry burst custom. Know anyone with a guitar like that?

Individually not among the world's best PU's, but decent. Together they're the odd couple with such opposite EQ's, which can be frustrating when trying to dial in your amp's EQ. For me they work with an UOA5 or A8 in the bridge, and an A5 in the neck.

Congrats! I've been wanting to give those a try for a while. :)

Haha! Agreed. Kinda like the Gibson equivalent of the EMG 81/85 set. :P

When you have spent some time with them, we'd love to hear your review of them.
