NRHD: Vintage Fender Reverb Head

My g/f has turned into a bit of a collector of vintage Fender stuff. She already has 68 Bassman head and a 69-70 oversize 2x12 Bandmaster cab. Today she bought (on Ebay) a Silverface Fender Tube Reverb Head, one of the ones they made from 76-78. From some reading, it seems like a different circuit from the earlier Blackface models, and they used a 6v6 instead of a 6k6 for the reverb driver.

Hopefully it'll be here soon, I'll post some pics! I can't wait to hear her try it out, and to try it out myself! Having a g/f who is as gear obsessed as me is pretty awesome!

Dude that's a score! Easy to find a vintage RCA 6K6 to sub in there too, they're plentiful and still cheap so buy a few of them!

Love my 1965 unit - owned this thing since 1988 and will likely be buried with it. lol

Oh - and when you plug it in for the first time and it doesn't work, check the spring brake lever. Hopefully the dude you've bought it from remembered to latch it before shipping...

We'll have to get a few 6k6s to try. I'm pretty excited, I'm definitely going to be "borrowing" it whenever I'm playing with my other band.

How did you luck into a girlfriend who's a gearhead? Marry her before one of the millions of guitar players out there swoops down. If I had a wife who played guitar and collected vintage Fenders, I'd work on a Marshall and Vox collection! LOL

I'll do you one better, our newest video.

Also featured in the video are her Bassman and Bandmaster Cab. I love how they sound, it honestly just sounds like she's playing a really really loud fiddle. With her Mesa, it definitely colors the tone, but the Bassman sounds completely natural.

That looks incredibly like the amp and cab of another one of our members.....
I think the SF units started to use the 6V6 out of common sense...it was available, and in use by Fender for other applications.
Correct me if I am wrong...but does not the SF unit have a SS recto instead of tube diodes.?

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe everything is tube. There are 4 tubes, as compared to the 3 from the tweed ones. And yeah, Agileguy uses the same head/cab combination.

I should have some more videos up by the end of next week. There are at least two, maybe four, others finished, I just need to go pick them up and haven't been able to set that up yet.

Tweed ones? There were no tweed ones unless you're talking about the '90s reissues.

A 6G15 has 3 tubes - 1-6K6, 1-12AT7, and 1-12AX7. If you're seeing a fourth, it's probably a cap can tube or something. I don't remember the '70s first edition reissue units being markedly different than the '60s models aside from using the 6V6.

The SF unit does have an "extra" tube. A parallel AX7 at the out put.
Looks like they are both SS recto btw.

I believe they also changed the drive section somehow.
