NSD - aka lead 12 gets an upgrade

Over the years I've developed a severe hatred for the stock speaker in my marshall lead 12. Like the sound of BBs being dumped onto a tin roof. Cranked to 10 it's OK I guess, but at low volumes the thing just sucks. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy (but watch for in the trading post though, haha).

So when I saw my resident speaker supplier/forum brother Checo with another killer deal, I couldn't help myself and picked up one of his G10N-40s. I mean just look at the magnet difference, even forced perspective doesn't help the poor sap:

(You can also see in this pic where I previously had a tech install a speaker out - when engaged, it bypasses the internal speaker to drive any 8 ohm cab).

I did some VERY quick clips of the old & new speakers using similar riffs and the mic placement and amp settings. The clip of the new was done late tonight, so I only did one take - it's shorter, sloppier, and out of tune, but don't want to wake my kids or punish my neighbors more than I have to.

Stock piece of crap:

It sounds great in the room, and sounds nice when I roll back the volume. I still need to tweak the amp settings to match this particular speaker and test out some OD pedals (especially to help calm the booming bass notes). Plus, the master is on like 2. I'll crank it and re-do a better clip when I can. But you get the idear.

Q: Would there be any harm in making a jack that is connected to the two extra tabs on the speaker and only using that jack (with other small heads) when the amp is completely off? Or would I have to also unplug the connections from the lead 12 every time? (I don't figure it is good for the tabs to routinely yank on them) I've got another 8 ohm 1 x 12 cab so it's not really essential.

Well the transformer isn't designed to have the output of another transformer going INTO it, so by leaving the lead12 connections on there, that's essentially what you're doing...all that current from whatever head you use would be flowing into your lead 12 transformer, and might destroy it. You want to have the speaker isolate every time you plug a head into it.

what I would do is attach a 1/4" jack connected to the speaker, but also put in a 1/4" plug on the wires coming from the lead 12's transformer. That way, you can just plug that into the jack when you want to use the lead 12, and when you unplug it, it frees up the speaker to be used with a head.

Ahh - reminds me of my SS lead 30. Actually had a good distortion tone when its gherkin was goosed (with a pedal). Clean was lacking compared to a Fender.

Loud too.

I shall be interested to learn how this issue turns out. My brother has a bone stock Lead 12.

well, it definitely sounds nice with a boss super OD; tightens things up. with the stock speaker though it's a little grating with an OD, but has a similar effect.
