Nut Comparation

Basically this is it:
Bone Vs. Brass Vs. Graphite.
I want to know how they compare one to each other in tone,price,durability...etc.
I was thinking about brass one because my saddles are brass too,but i have tremolo,so i suppose graphite is way to go.
Help me with this one!

Brass is the brightest, then goes Bone and then Graphite.

One question though - does the nut only affect the open string tone?

I've often wondered that it can't possibly affect the tone of a fretted note, but I guess someone else will know for sure...

it affects it, but not that much. The other end of the guitar still affects the tone, if it didn't then the tuning pegs wouldn't be there to determine the pitch.

The vibration of the string is still slightly affected by the nut, so it's always good to have a decent one.

I've had wonderful results with TUSQ nuts. They're a synthetic ivory/bone material.

I don't like the way my stainless steel strings seem to bind on a brass nut. I like bone nuts. They're self lubricating and sound good to me.

Nuntius - thanks for the direct link. Couldn't find the darn page for a while earlier.

Abaddon - you can make nut slots slippery with pencil lead or some other dry lubricant. A Graph Tech nut works like a champ for me with a tremelo. Locking tuners are a must with a tremelo too IMHO.

I have locking nut on my guitar as well as regular nut (i have Kahler system that has locking nut behind regular nut,unlike Floyd Rose),so i don't have to worry about friction and lubrication.
