Nut replacement on Standard SG

I'm about to turn a new Gibson Standard SG into a drop C only guitar. I'll be putting 11-54 strings on it but I kinda want to go ahead and change the nut out for something more fitting instead of cutting the current one. Any suggestions?

Any well-cut bone nut would work. You may have to adjust the slots for larger strings, but you are not using a trem, so no need for graphite.

I'd suggest paying a pro tech to change nuts on Gibsons, because of how much glue and finish is involved. Make sure he's a real luthier who will score the finish, slice the middle and implode the nut, not a wannabe who will try to yank it out and make a mess.

Replace with Bone , Corian, or Tusq, and supply the strings you plan to use.

$45 - $60 total is the going rate.

Is Gibson still welding them in? I'd heard they quit doing that a couple years ago.

I think the less expensive Gibsons don't lacquer the area, but Stds and higher end models are pretty hard to remove.

I know one thing. I have decent skills and have done sloppy jobs on Gibsons I regret.

Other times, I took Gibsons to reputable LA pros who work on celebrity guitars. I get my guitar back and smile ear to ear because it's beyond perfect in every way, and I paid $50 - $55. Polished bone with slots that are done to perfection. The guitar rings just right and stays in tune.

Yeah man, take it to a qualified/insured tech & have them do it...

There's a very good possibility that they'll have to cut out the original because it's probably cemented in & there's also a pretty good chance of you breaking the headstock of your lovely S.G. trying to knock it out after scoring the nut like you'd do to a Epi...

Chances are they'll get it right the first time, with your preferred gauge of strings. Plus if they screw it up or break it they will have to either fix their work (or in the case of a broken headstock) replace the guitar...

Id suggest buying your own replacement nut because some techs tend to overcharge for parts but the piece of mind you'll get is well worth the $40-$50 they usually charge! Also you don't really have to bother with any of it & it's not exactly one of those things that are kinda fun to do yourself anyway???

A resonable solid synthetic material perfectly seated at the factory on a $1500 guitar is as good as you're going to get. Don't change it unless you specifically want something brighter like micarta or corian, or better performance like a roller nut. And for the love of God, don't use bone. The absolute worst tone possible.
