Octave Fuzz without the Fuzz

Re: Octave Fuzz without the Fuzz

The issue is this, analog octave up be it in an octave/fuzz or something like the Octron or COB it won't work lower than the 9th fret give or take, does little above the 15th fret give or take and won't do much besides making ugly noises on the bridge pickup.

Personally I love the sound of an octave fuzz used for rhythm work on the bridge pickup. It's got that awesome trashy tone that brings out your inner garage rock star a la Josh Homme.

Fwiw, there's actually a modification you can do to a Tonebender Mark 1 circuit (it may work for other tonebenders but I don't know) that will give you clean octaving. I tried it in person and it sounds amazing. It's extremely simple, just two parts, and one of them is a switch. Unfortunately, pedal guru Paul Trombetta is the only one that's discovered it so far and he's not telling anybody how to do it. Plus, his pedals have a year plus waitlist and this particular tonebender is $300. But it's absolutely worth it. I say that not just as a friend of Paul but as an avid tone geek. He makes some of the best dirt pedals on the planet.

There are several fuzz boxes that'll do the octave thing with a tweak or two but you're still left with a limited use (in terms of how it works) unit that costs a lot.

If you can deal with the limitations of how to use it the Octron is a great unit, can be had pretty cheap used and also has a great sub octave too!

The Eventide will give you the purest signal with minimal digital artifacts

Re: Octave Fuzz without the Fuzz

Foxrox Octron is the best I've used. I had the ultimate octave, octavias, whammy... And the octron's octave is the best analog style to use with Buckers that I've found. It has internal trimmers to switch between an octavia style and a more bucker friendly style... Plus a boss oc-2 like lower octave you cab blend in or leave out.

It's a GREAT pedal. I use it for solos, fat riffs and just whacked out noise all the time.

I think I found the answer to your pedal question on the cheap. I've actually been looking for a similar thing and was going to dish out for one of the nano pogs to use just for octave up + some dry mix but just saw this new mooer pedal that's coming soon...

I'm in the same boat as you, I even use a G-Major II in my loop and the octaves in it suck post pre. I'm a high gain player and the last thing I want in my gain tone is the fizz, fuzz and splat that comes with a octave fuzz (cool sound but not what I want). I use an MXR bass octave deluxe for octave down (CKY style) but always wanted a good octave up without the fuzz too since my amps absurd gain negates any need for fuzz and having fuzz would just be a wall of noise.

Re: Octave Fuzz without the Fuzz

Mooer clones (and sometimes tweaks the circuit or creates their own) popular pedals and shrinks them down into the tiny enclosures. Odds are it will be like all the rest of their pedals in the $60-80 range.

Re: Octave Fuzz without the Fuzz

That's what I'm thinking. If it doesn't do what I want I can return it or sell it then admit defeat and cough up the cash for a nano POG.
