OD pedals with plexi amps

How many of you use OD pedals with your plexi or pelxi type amps? What would be the best way to OD a plexi, while having the distortion on a full throttle or use it while the gain is low (clean)?
What type of pedals do you use, Boss, Analogman, Keeley, Rat, MXR, clean boost pedals, etc…..?

Thanks

Re: OD pedals with plexi amps

OD pedals typically sound best with the amp's gain riding the edge of clean/natural OD.
The more gain the amp has, the less percieved volume the pedal has. The cleaner the amp, the louder the pedal seems.

Since plexi's have rich, full mids, I like OD pedals that don't have a big midspike.
To really find your tone, it's best to read the reviews of any OD pedals that interest you. Anything from an Ibanez 808 Reissue, old Rat, to more expensive boutique OD's will give you great lead tones out of a Plexi.

I use a Rat and MXR Micro Amp into my Marshall 59 SLP. BOSS SD-1's work well too. The Rat has a decent tone knob to get that mid range thing happening. Give one a try.

IMO, the plexi is a great canvas to color with pedals. I had a Roccaforte-modded SLP that I stupidly sold (because it sounded too much like my JCM 800...but better  ). Oh, well.

Re: OD pedals with plexi amps

I thought about Keeleys RAT pedal it has some mods to do clean boost to get the amp very distorted.....

I think Keeley has a "cleaner" setting on the Rat 3 way mod that's cleaner overall.

Another thing about the Keeley mod is the "Phat" setting. really beefs up single coils but works well too with HB'ers. EQ and compression in the chain on the input of Plexi's also work extremely well in my experience, providing a virtual "pallete" of sonic textures. :)

On my Plexi module I use a Keeley TS Plus mod and a Keeley TS Baked mod as a boost. The gain on the Plexi is halfway. Very very dynamic with a lot of sustain. :)

So far I tried the EQ, with compression pedal and the MXR micro amp, all with great success. Now I was wondering about a distortion pedal or a OD pedal to go with the plexi since it is much mentioned when talking about plexis gain and OD.

Kendrick Buffalo Pfuz is a good one to try. You see them on Ebay for about $75.00. The Pfuz is very clean and transparent. With the fuzz maxed its still clean, with a clear high end. It can be used for fuzz, or for volume boost. If you like the sound of your amp, then its a great one to consider.
