Odd Experiment!! 59/SM hybrid!!!

I have made a quite extrange experiment making two hybrid humbuckers from a Stag Mag and a 59neck. Since I have two pickups I have set them in the neck and bridge spots of the same guitar.

Results are quite interesting but I'll let you judge them. For me the sound it's quite interesting.

I have made 5 clips which feature:

1) neck
2) middle
3) bridge
4) 59 coils from both hybrids in series
5) SM coils from both hybrids in series

All have a clean and a dirty section (the first clip has two dirty sections). I have used the same eq's settings in all the clips. Start from the one above:

Hope you find it interesting!!

Wow . . . what a coincidence. I have a SM and a 59 neck also, and was starting to do the same thing. I had already split the black SM in half, (I have a black one and a zebra), when Youngpup expressed an interest in the black one, so I put it back together.

I'm at work now, but as soon as I get home, I'll download your clips and listen to them. ;)

btw - I had planned on seeing if the magnets in the SM would "drive" the 59 coil. Is that what you did, or did you install a bar magnet also?

No kidding!!! Are you doing the same experiment?!

In fact I have tried it before ussing a JB with no magnet but I have found that it lost a lot of clarity. It's funny that I haven't tryed to see how the JB coils output was with the magnetic field of the SM slug. I just didn't like the tone so I took it off. :smack: I just assumed that the magnetic field was too weak. I still think it's a good asumption but I just didn't proof it! :smack:. I ended thinking that a pasive coil affects the tone in a bad way. It remooved a lot of treble from the original SM coil. And that wan't too logical because the JB split, at least in the bridge, it is quite trebly. May be you have an explanation for that... ;).

Since I wanted good clarity I went for the 59, but this time with the bar magnet. This makes the 59 coil to have an "active" output, and increases slightly the magnet field in the SM coil. Since the SM it's an alnicoII that wasn't too bad...

Hope you like the clips!!

I wonder if its anything like the Custom Shop's Nokie Edwards pickup? I haven't had the opportunity to hear your clips yet as I'm at work :D

I was doing it, but never finished. I had the Stag Mag split apart, and I was trying to decide whether to do the Custom, (which was already apart), or the 59, when I saw Youngpup's post asking about a SM. He prefered the black one, so I put it back together and sent it to him.

Now I've changed my mind and am doing something else all together.
I'm going to physically split either the SM or the 59, into two separate singles, then install those into an HSS guitar. I'm just trying to decide which. Obviously, the SM's would split into singles better, but that would mean using a neck 59 in the bridge. Which might work ok for this experiment. I'm not sure yet.

btw - Nice clips. I liked the clean settings the best. Nice jazzy/bluesy tone going.

Thanks!! I apreciate it... :)

You could also consider to put a 59 coil in the neck, a SM coil in the middle and a SM/59 hybrid in the bridge. That would be a nice thing to try!! The main problem would be to provide a magnetic field to the 59 coil in the neck...

Hmmm . . . yeah, thats an interesting idea. I'll think about it.
