Odd Strat ??

Son Of Monster

and Son of Charlie
Hey All,
I have an odd question about my Strat. I want my Strat more chunky, kinda ugly. My Daddio said maybe the "Hot Rails" for Strat might be the ticket, but he wasn't sure. As he put it, "I'm a bass player for a metal band, go on the forum and ask". So here is the Question. What would you guys suggest? I like chunk, bottom-end, rumble, but still clear. And I don't want to do drastic drop tuning. In advance thank you for your ideas.

Re: Odd Strat ??

What amp are you playing through?
Do you want to stay single sized or can you move to a full sized HB?

Re: Odd Strat ??

Hot Rails is very chunky, but also pretty dark as well. That can be a very good think for a brighter Strat you want to tame, but depending on your definition of "clear" it may or may not fit the bill.

I don't have experience with it, but I wonder how the JB Jr. would work out for you?

Re: Odd Strat ??

Hi All,
Toaswer the above questions: I play through a Marshall half stack. When I say clear I mean not super muddy, but dark and chuncky. I don't want to put a hb in.
Thanks,
S.O.M.

Maybe i can help you.
I play Strat with Hot Rails - neck/bridge (see my avatar)
all you wanted in your first post - its there.
Iron Maiden's live tone - Hot Rails. Janick used them since 1990, and still does on some of the songs (now he mostly play the jb. jr.). Dave still play the Hot Rails since 1990.
I have no experience with maple neck (maybe check out some Dave Murray in youtube), but it sounds awesome with rosewood.

Hot Rails has all the advantages of a Humbucker, but it keeps the Single coil character. plus it lets you keep the classic strat look.

Re: Odd Strat ??

The maple neck should generally be brighter than rosewood. This would offset some of the darkness of the hotrails.

The hotrails is very chunky. I would not tend to put them in every spot, but they kick ass in the bridge.

Re: Odd Strat ??

You could try the hot rails, and if it's too dark, try replacing the vol./tone pot from 250K, to 350K, that would brighten it slightly.

Good luck.

Too Dark? Never!! To Qute Nathan Explosion of Dethklock, "BLACKER THEN THE BLACKEST BLACK TIMES INFENITY". Do you suggest I put Hot Rails in the bride and neck only? Or all 3 places? Thanks again you guys!

my setup:
neck: hot rails
middle: stock
bridge: hot rails

as i said, the Live Maiden tone. sounds like janick in the bridge, sounds like Dave in the neck.

Cheers
