Oh man just tried a Matchless Phoenix 35

Gods what an amp.......wonderful complex amp that covers a great deal of the tonal spectrum.
The lead is great, and I pushed it with a boost from one of my HDB's and with my Hydrabooster......I am still in the process of getting new underwear :laugh2:
The last Matchless I tried was a Chieftain....too voxlike for me, all nose....dunno maybe the room was bad for it dunno??
But the Phoenix head....wow
To all who are thinking about getting a Matchless.....just get one, they make awesome amps.

No reverb or trem, just a dry head:)
Awesome amp.
Two effectloops for each channel.
And a nice 5AR4 rectifier tube.

Here it is.
Classic sound with that extra magic.
Sounds everybit as good as most of all those Vintageamps out there, and I have tried alot of those;)
And this is just like playing an old friend, with something extra.
The touch on this amp was just fantastic.
And the price is not even bad when you consider what it is you will get.

Re: Oh man just tried a Matchless Phoenix 35

I've played that thing. It's nice. I know what you mean about the Chieftain being a little Vox-like. That's why I don't use mine as my main amp, but I love it to death, tho. I'm leaning more towards head/cab's for Hotcat's
and the Phoenix 35. That tone shouldn't really come out of a Vox styled cab.
I may get a headcab for my Chieftain, since that amp shines on a 4-12.
That, with a good OD is the fattest lead tone I've ever heard.

Re: Oh man just tried a Matchless Phoenix 35

Yeah I wondered how the Chieftain would sound with a 4x12 cab.
Probally getting some real good crunch out of that one, I forgot what speakers they put in the combo??
My old AC-30 I had from 67 sounded very good through and old 4x12 30watts greenback equipped Marshall cab.

Re: Oh man just tried a Matchless Phoenix 35

I played a Phoenix at the Rock Block in Nashville. Great overdrive sound on channel 2. I thought it was more detailed than the Bad Cat HotCat 15. Cahnnel 1 wasn't as dimensional sounding as the DC30, but that's to be expected when you switch from EL84 power to EL34. The amp was a 112 combo. List was $3000, and they offered it for $2600.
