Ohms

Ok so my buddy goofed really hard and bought an 8ohm cab and his amp only takes 16 ohm (Orange CR120H)

Could he get an 8ohm dummy load and run it WITH the 8 ohm cab into his amp and have 16 ohms and not blow up his transformer?

Yes, if the dummy load and the speaker cab are in series, then the amp will be sending into a 16Ohm load.

NOTE: edited to remove a piece of pre-caffeine idiocy about wiring two speakers in series - sorry, and thanks for setting the record straight, LPB!

Re: Ohms

If the speakers are wired in parallel to provide an 8-ohm load (and there are two), they are 16-ohm speakers. Wiring them in series would yield 32 ohms.

I would vote for returning the cabinet, if possible. If not, consider selling off the speaker(s) and buying 16 ohms' worth to replace it/them.

Re: Ohms

So.... Yes you could use a dummy load, but that means the load will be dissipating half of the power.

LPB is correct on how to calculate a speaker load.

However... I believe that you may be misunderstanding the amp's requirement, here is the text from this link:
https://ln-media.orangeamps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Orange-Crush-Pro-Series-Manual-V16.pdf

"CR120 Head
 1 x 8Ω OR 1 x 16Ω cabinet connected to either SPEAKER OUTPUT terminal.
 2 x 16Ω cabinets connected to either SPEAKER OUTPUT terminal."

Also:
"Minimum Total Impedance 8 ohms"

If it's NOT a CR120H, then other requirements may apply.

Re: Ohms

Running a dummy load with a cabinet can correct the impedance but that is NOT the correct way to fix this issue.

We need the cab info...how many speakers and what is the impedance of the speakers in the cabinet??

Re: Ohms

Adding to PFDarksides post, this is from the description on the Orange Website ...

"You can run one of three cab configurations on the CR120 head:

– One 16 ohm cab connected to the one of the speaker outputs.

– Two 16 ohm cabs connected to both speaker outputs, or daisy-chained together to one of the speaker outputs.

One 8 ohm cab connected to one of the speaker outputs.

It’s better to not daisy-chain, in case the first cable or cab in the chain were to go out during a performance; then you’d lose all your sound.

Running a separate cable to each cab insures at least one cab will still be going if a speaker cable or cab goes out during a performance."

It's pretty clear from the description and manual that the 120H is designed to run either a 16 ohm OR 8 ohm speaker/cabinet. So as long as your buddy is running only ONE 8 ohm cabinet, not two 8 ohms cabinets nor one 8 ohm plus one 16 ohm cabinet, he should be good to go.

Re: Ohms

Thank you! He honestly hasnt told me that much, I just wanted to know if doing what I asked was possible or not. Thanks again!
