Ok, final question...

I'm stuck between two pickups I've researched and have settled on, the Screamin' Demon and the JB, both trembuckers. My guitar, Caparison TAT, is alder. I had the JB in my old LTD Ninja, but didn't like the highs, and I've heard the Screamin' Demon really shines in that area. I just want to know which pickup sounds best in that kind of wood, and whether I should give the JB another try. I have no idea on how to swap magnets, by the way...

Re: Ok, final question...

Heyyyy fellow Caparison TAT owner! Since the TAT is a lot like a Jackson soloist build-wise...and a lot of those come with JBs..I'd give that a go first. I had a SD in an alder bolt on Jackson, and it was very nice. The real question is what kind of music do you want to play?

Re: Ok, final question...

I've seen your name on the Caparison forum here and there, cool! My initial requests for my pickups were to be able to play everything from classic rock / metal (Rush, Boston, Judas Priest, Ratt) to the heavier side of metal (Carcass, Arch Enemy, Exodus, etc.) I put Blackouts in my Ninja V so I'm ok with my TAT not sounding supremely heavy. My amp's an original 5150, so I'm doing good for gain to make these pickups pack a punch when needed. One thing I wasn't impressed with the JB in my Ninja V was the clean tone. I know the 5150 isn't the best for cleans, but even plugged into a Randall T2 and a Marshall, I wasn't that impressed, but everything I'm saying about the JB is all based on my experience with this one guitar, so I'm hoping that pickup sounds much better in a guitar like this. Thanks to anyone that responds to this.

Re: Ok, final question...

If you want JB-like overdrive with better clean tones, consider the SD Allan Holdsworth model humbucker. This is now a custom order item but pre-owned ones do become available from time to time on internet auction and listing sites.

Alder is very different from mahogany, and a lot of people do love the JB that comes standard in Jacksons. For leads and harmonics, the upper mid spike in the JB can be just awesome. A neck-through is more similar to an all-maple guitar, and many consider that the JB's home territory.

The JB is not known for it's cleans, though. If you need good cleans, you generally need a different pickup. Still, your guitar is one of the best matches for a JB, I'd try it and if it isn't perfect, consider the 21-day swap guarantee...

Everything here's interesting to know. I'm curious though as to how the 21-day swap works. Do I just purchase a new pickup from any given shop, and return it to S.D. if I don't like it?

I'd ask at the store, or check seymourduncan.com -- the info should be posted there. You need to contact SD & arrange the return first. But you do need to be someplace where the guarantee is available, I'm not sure it is outside the USA.

Definitely check with your dealer before deciding where to gamble. Or you might want to check used, JB's are very readily available as they are an extremely popular model (particularly as a stock pickup), so even though most love it, the few who don't still keep it readily available used, most places.

If the swap isn't available, you can take longer to make up your mind and sell it if you don't care for it. If you go used, you'll likely lose little on that option.

Re: Ok, final question...

Yeah, I sold my regular JB, so it's a shame it wasn't a trembucker or else it would've saved me a lot of money. Thanks for the info on the stores though. There's a cool little music store and ordered a Hot Rails for the middle position, but that took a month to get as they forgot to add that it was neck / middle, not bridge. XD

How're the cleans on the Custom though? I know Gary Holt uses them, but that's about all I know about that pickup.
