Ok...how about this for a FRETBOARD cleaner/conditioner

Re: Ok...how about this for a FRETBOARD cleaner/conditioner

I post about this product last night asking about its affect on nitrocellulose finishes. Thinking about it further, it seems like it would make a good fretboard conditioner as well. There is a link to the product specs.

Bleh. If it's ebony or rosewood, I'd use ebony or rosewood oil (hard to find), or a fretboard cleaner product specifically for fretboards.

There is nothing in this product that would appear to affect a bare wood.

Most guitar polishes and conditioners are a rip off.

I've never conditioned my fretboard and haven't had a problem yet.

Then use pure ebony wood oil on it :D To me that makes more sense than anything else.

Why not just use lemon oil? Thats what most Luthiers use.

Re: Ok...how about this for a FRETBOARD cleaner/conditioner

I just bought the Gibson Luthier's Choice set. I figured since the set was really cheap (Like $10) for bottles of string cleaner, fretboard conditioner and hi-gloss polish (works on nitro) that it was not a COMPLETE rip-off. I've used the fretboard conditioner and it works great.

You only need a couple of drops of pure lemon oil on a Q-Tip. It goes a long way. And that would be for a half ounce of the pure lemon oil. :lmao:

Re: Ok...how about this for a FRETBOARD cleaner/conditioner

a bottle of lemon oil is like $4 man, why cut corners for $4? heck i bet you can find close to $4 in change if you check the couches and chairs in the house and under the seats in your car LOL. plus i tiny bottle of stuff like the dunlop or whatever brand should last you over a year if you use it correctly there's NO need for a massive bottle of it. if you think you NEED a massive bottle of it please stop working on your own guitar, you're going to cause more harm than good with large amounts of oil.

i'm all about saving cash and DIY and trying new stuff but for such a small amount of cash it's not even worth the time.

Use something that is made for a guitar. Why is it that every week someone is looking for the next best thing for this job? Its not like the correct products to do the task are hard to find or expensive. They do an effective job also.

I'm paranoid and a perfectionist, goes with the territory :D I try to use the best quality product on my guitars because, while I can afford expensive cleaners, it's worth it to have the best, and I can't afford to replace a fretboard or neck.

However, I'm curious: what would you guys use for a maple neck guitar? :D

For cleaning,

Nitro finish, mild soapy water.
Poly finish, Naptha

A finished maple board does not need to be conditioned.

Re: Ok...how about this for a FRETBOARD cleaner/conditioner

Theodie is probobly gonna disappear for months after this, being fed with people like me. But I play MIA strat, maple neck, maple fretboard(actually there is no "freboard" on top per say). And I use lem-oil to clean the fret board, it makes vibrato so much easier because its like on an ice-rink, the first 3-4 weeks the tone is so violinsh you can not but notice. My figners are extremely acidic, after a while I have to scrap of the black grease lines(and I do whipe the neck and guitar off before and after every time I play) So it works for me.
