ok so I leveled the frets on my charvel pro-mod wild card 4, re-crowned the frets, sanded, polished, re-strung it set the relief to 0.006 at the 10th fret, set the string height at just below 2/32", checked the sting height at the last fret and it was just over 2/32". everything looked great and the guitar played geat and sounded great but it is still making a weird sound on the low e at around the 14th fret. it got worse on the lower frets, pretty much no change. I decided to check the intonation tonight and it is sharp at the 12th and progressively get more sharp as I go down. I should have checked this first not last. I am hoping the weird messed up tone I am hearing is the sharpness caused by the intonation being out. oh well live and learn.

oh by the way I am starting to learn that even though lower action is easier to play I am not happy with the sacrifice in tone and sustain. I am going back up, strange how just a little bit high action can change the tone and really make the instrument sing.

oh stop your making me blush. lol. unfortunately I tend to make things harder then they need to be.

yeah unfortunately I learn a lot that way, well atleast I got more practice at fret work, and my wildcard has nice shiny like new frets, hope to get another 4 years out of it if not more. kinda digging my Jackson DK2M again. been playing that while my charvel has been down.

1) can't see any idiocy here.
2) my action is that high on low E, 24th fret. On high E it is even lower. You should have no problem getting full sustaining tone, if your fretwork is perfect, and your picking is not heavy.
3) raising the action would make the intonation go even sharper. Going up, you increase tension when fretting, think about it. If this is a FR bridge, you can always adjust the saddles for getting more accurate intonation.

Re: OK I AM OFFICIALLY AN IDIOT!!!!

Action should have little to no impact on tone and sustain unless the strings vibrate against the frets. In that case, I'd the action is too low.

Re: OK I AM OFFICIALLY AN IDIOT!!!!

Could be loose frets or a tiny bit of acceptable twist. Unless your guitar is plek'd, the fingerboard will not be perfectly straight and some variance is to be expected.

Getting action down super low is really difficult to do... you can get it to sound good through the amp, but acoustically, you can still hear plinks, farts and dead notes.

Plus... it's Summer and truss rods need to be adjusted. Our Winter and Spring set-ups have all gone to crap. I'd just get a little relief in there, get a magnifying glass out and look at the area... you might even need to take out a little fretboard wood via sanding depending upon what you find.

Re: OK I AM OFFICIALLY AN IDIOT!!!!

ok so i set the intonation (i found out that the saddle screw on my flyoyd had allowed the saddle to slip) checked my neck relief (0.007 at 9th fret) set my string height at the 12th fret to 1.5mm (chekced it at the 22nd fret and i have it about 1.85mm to 1.9mm) and it plays wonderfully again. and it sounds great
