OK, Stupid Question...

Wax potting. Where did it start? Who did it first? I heard EVH claiming he started it and I'm having a hard time believing that no one potted a pickup before he did. Anybody have any insight into this?

Re: OK, Stupid Question...

Not true by any stretch... fender wax potted pre cbs pickups. Don't know the exact year they started but they did. Not sure if they are the first but all I know is EVH did not invent wax potting...

OK, Stupid Question...

Well, Fender has potted their pickups in wax (and sometimes lacquer) pretty much the whole time the company has been making pickups. But they didn't really let the wax fully penetrate the coils the way that is now considered "proper." It's more like adding a wax shell than actually letting the wax penetrate the coil.

Gibson...I'm really not sure. I know there were some pickups in the '80's, and maybe the '70's, that were epoxy potted. That not only doesn't do the job, but it makes any future repairs impossible. I don't know when they started potting as a matter of course. Maybe it was shortly after the company was bought from Norlin and "revived" in the mid-'80's.

At any rate, the process in general existed at least 25 years before EVH did it (since before he was even conceived). And I would guess that by that time, more than a few repairmen had potted their share of Gibson pickups too.

Haha, I was gonna say go check the EVH video in the off topic but I see you are already aware of his claim.

Did you seriously ask that? And you work someplace where you need to able to count?

I'm unfriending you.

Giving life tips: anytime EVH is involved in a statement, dismiss it.

Re: OK, Stupid Question...

It was something done early on by Fender and Gibson but then stopped as a cost cutting measure by CBS and Norlin. The years where EVH was learning how to play guitar and started to tinker with things were the years where neither of the big guys was properly potting pickups if at all.

So, while EVH didn't invent it he was doing it at a time when the major manufacturers weren't.
