Old guy alert!! First post... be kind, LOL !!

Re: Old guy alert!! First post... be kind, LOL !!

I have complete pickguard with pups from a very early version of the Lone Star Strat. And Gregory is right, the Pearly Gates Plus is internally reversed to the Duncan specs and ready to work with Fender pups.
Lucky Thorn, could you please confirm for me: The old version of the Lone Star strat pickguard doesn't carry Fender designations like recent ones. The Texas Specials Singles Coil pups do not carry the nowadays silver Fender CS labels. Thanks.

Thanks hamerfan... I just acquired a new Pearly Gates (not a "plus", I don't think) but I am using it.... Does that mean I SHOULD reverse the green and black wiring?
I also don't see any kind of nomenclature on the singles...

Hey, People... That was an awesome bunch of responses. (and possible ideas for the future) I DID reverse the black and green wires (green to the 5 way switch and black to ground) and now have 5 usable positions! Thanks to all of you for your assistance!! And for being so patient with a first timer here.

As a famous person once said: "Ah'll be bahhk"...

Happy New (tone) Year!!!!!!!!

Re: Old guy alert!! First post... be kind, LOL !!

As long as the single coils don't use anything other than 250k pots, fine. I used 500k pots for my HSS and the single coils sounded horrible.

Re: Old guy alert!! First post... be kind, LOL !!

Oh, c'mon now! How do you feel about singles without a tone control (bridge or middle come to mind)?

What about combining singles that connect two tone controls?

...and as I said, some people like hotter-than-vintage singles with 500k pots.

Seriously, though: why are we still having this conversation?

If you think single coils with 500k pots sound good then you are incredible. Ignore list worthy you are. Are you deaf?

Re: Old guy alert!! First post... be kind, LOL !!

There is a way around this:

5-way_L-Pad.png

Use 250k pots. When in the full HB'er mode, the resistor acts as both an impedance match and a voltage divider. The HB'er see's a full 500k load and it's voltage is divided by two, to match the single coil output. In every other mode, the resistor is out of the circuit. If you don't want the output cut in half, you can adjust the level of attenuation by the resistor you select using the chart. Or, better yet, put in a little trim-pot, and dial in the exact amount of level you want.

I tried 1meg vol and no load tone with ssl1s once - it was a bonesaw.

SSL-6 with a 500k pots (or 250k volume pot and no load tone) sounds bad?!?

I'd be careful with always and never type posts if I were you. Besides, just because you tried something in your specific guitar and rig, doesn't mean it's going to work for someone else.

Re: "Ignore List"
I like that you just stick your head in the sand when faced with reasonable dissension: classy!

You might want to treble bleed that resistor, depending on the HB, but I agree it's a great idea.

Two words: Orange Amplifiers. I've used 1meg pots for a Mustang before. It had Invader single coils. Believe it or not it was actually a nice guitar for Jazz.

You're probably right. I gotta admit, that scheme only exists on paper. I haven't actually tried it yet. :smack:
