Hey guys thought someone here might be able to give me some advice about my amp.
Firstly - My rig: Im running an old Seymour Duncan KTG-1 Guitar Pre into a Seymour Duncan KTG-2100 Power Amp. These drive a Seymour Duncan 4x12 cab. I play Epi Les Paul Standards and I plug in thru my Yamaha Magic Stomp and an Ibanez Smashbox Distortion pedal.
I have 2 major problems, both of which I attribute to dodgy tubes. Firstly, when you push the volume up on the power amp (past about 1/3) you loose any tightness in the sound, it doesnt distort as such just becomes flabby and loose. It is particularly noticable when using the distortion pedal or the distortion of the magic stomp
Secondly, When playing at moderate volumes the clean channel of the preamp is really beautiful and full of life and colour but at any settings the overdrive channel is basically un-usable. It is incredibly bass heavy, loose and "farty"
As I said above I think that I need to replace the tubes pretty much across the board but I would really like to hear from anyone who owns one of these and get their experiences opinions. Also, if you're a tube nut you could point me in the right direction as to which brands/models would get the hard rock/metal tones that im looking for. The power tubes are KT88's and the pre tubes are 12ax7's and 12au7's.
Thanks guys!
