Old Tube Radio 4sale.

Re: Old Tube Radio 4sale.

nah, that thing looks beat to heck. Old radios don't use a lot of the same tubes guitar amps do either. The only think worthwhile in that is the transformer and maybe to sell some of the random tubes in there to radio people.

If you want guitar amp conversion fodder, find an old organ with tube power amps. 60s, mostly. Most people try to get rid of those for way cheap or free (you haul). There usually isn't much worth salvaging on them as an organ, but the speaker can be nice (a vintage worn-in speaker is a great addition to a cheap tube amp), and the power amps are very similar to older Tweed amps.

also, PA amps. Bogens are all over the place and they're practically a Tweed Deluxe.

Re: Old Tube Radio 4sale.

Jon, thanks for the info, I'll keep a lookout for a organ. Still wonder if it can be modified just using the base. Thanks again. Cheers.

Well I'll say this; there's going to be a TON of junk in that chassis that you'll be cutting out. The caps will all be dry. There will be a ton of wacky relays in there. The tubes will be as linear and low gain as the could produce. The chassis is HUGE, like 5 times as heavy as is needed. The connectors in and out all have to be replaced to something modern.

I am probably coming off as a jerk; sorry. I have direct experience with something like this and it was a complete mistake to undertake it. There just wasn't enough to work with in the amp.

You may as well get something like this - its ready to go. You'd spend that much or more on getting that old thing on CL race ready.

With all the little lunch boxes out now, it's not as economical as it used to be.

A lot of them are pretty much good to go once the jacks have been changed out, if the tubes and caps are still OK. I think the Bogen chb series is a great bang for the buck. I'd steer clear of ones with way too many tubes or weird tubes.

There's not a huge resale value usually, even if the sound may rival name brand amps to your ears.

I used to get mine converted at mtronics in Mesa, but not sure if they are still there - I think the owner fell ill awhile back. I took about 4 amps to them, most didn't need much work done to them. Places like field sevices want to charge too much.

Darkstar, I think Field Services has closed. I'll look at mtronics. I was thinking just using the chassis if I get it cheap & not trying to make a amp out of the old parts.

Re: Old Tube Radio 4sale.

Probably SE and low wattage, which is fine. Could make a great recording/low wattage amp.
As others have said, you will be gutting most of the circuitry...all those variable caps...anything to do with RF will get tossed.
But if you can then use the chassis, Pt and OT you might have something workable.
If you KNOW the tranny set is good, I would not pay more than 30 bux for that.....as a guitar player.
You would probably end up with a chassis only running one power tube and 1-3 pre tubes...depending on what you built.
A Lot of work in turning that around. But if you have the time.......
