Local shop has an old Squier in... not Japan, It's Korean.... Nice neck, kind of 57 reissue like, nice finnished neck, thick finnish but nice... Trem is vintage specs with a nice full block, frets are like new...

I can only remember part of the seriel number, but it starts with "S90....". I figure 1989 but i'm guessing

what are the chnaces this Squier is PLYWOOD?

It's for a good price.... $220 Canadian

Re: older Squier Questions

I have seen a few of those MIK Squires...most if them were from the early to mid 90's as far as I know...pull thr trem cover off and see if it's plywood or not...Im betting it's not but I don't wannt say for sure.

Thanks for the imput... i almost bought it tonight.... but i need another cheap strat like a hole in the head... But i still am looking into it...

I have a 1994 MIM Squier strat.... by 94 Fender was without a contract for an over seas factory to make Squiers so they made them in Mexico for a short time.... the mIM Squire is pretty much the same as a MIM Standard

The frets and neck look new on this strat yet the body is a bit beat up.... this i find slightly strange, but all the parts are pretty much stock Squier looking from the late 80's.....

Re: older Squier Questions

Nobody????

For what I have read, it is really made of plywood, sealed and with a veneer cap... so it is hard to see the ply, unless you do a lot of sanding. Despite that I have just bought one since it is a nice guitar to mod. I will be changing all the electronics. I will use a SD Lil59 on the neck, a SD Hotrails on the bridge and still need to work out what PU I´ll buy for mddle position, most likely a duckbuster. I have full size 500k alpha caps, clothed waxed vintage style wire and a Oak Grisby 5 way selector to fit in. ;)

Famously, Yamaha used to run an advertisement for their Pacifica 112 model featuring two photographs. One image of a natural finish Pacifica, edge-on, illustrating its solid wood body. The second image was of an MIK Squier Stratocaster with the paint sanded off its edge to reveal the ply construction.

Re: older Squier Questions

I have a Korean Strat, it's for sure plywood. It sounds fine and the ply body is actually lighter than the "real wood" body I got rid of. I'd be more worried that it's a 1.5" depth body than a ply body. Unless it's a 2-point trem, then ply sucks because the studs will pull out if you use it a lot, the 6-screw vintage ones are fine.
Like they said, pull the back plate off, that's the easiest way to be sure. Unless you're buying it for resale, pretty much don't worry if it's ply.
