This might be fun, no?

What's the oldest guitar you've ever owned? Or played? Or seen? Any of these categories, or all.

I have a Japanese classical guitar that was built in 1967.

A 1983 Alvarez that my grandfather used to play. I still have it and for some reason its still very very new looking and plays better than any Taylor or Martin I've ever picked up

Re: Oldest guitar you've ever owned? Played? Seen?

I have played a few old Gibsons and Strats. They are nothing special. The quality from guitar to guitar is very is inconsistent and many of them are dogs. Not that some of them aren't pretty good,I have played a 57 Strat, a 50's P-90 Les Paul, and a 1959 burst that were ok, actually the sounded fairly good and didn't play all that bad, , but I much rather own a new reissue.

EDIT- figured I'd beat the typical moron to this post.:lmao:

( suck it up-no one hates a braggart more than me, but if I wanted to, i could play all three of those tonight)

I found this at a used store last year. It's a weird, homemade... thing. The neck is from a 50's Kay, the body is several pieces of Ash, the pots dated to August 1959 (and none of the wiring was disturbed, so I'm gonna call the pickups the same age) and the pickguard is Formica (counter top material)
So I'm gonna say this is early 60's.

Wild. What's it say on the headstock?

Re: Oldest guitar you've ever owned? Played? Seen?

the oldest i own is a '58 guild t100, oldest ive played was a 1890's martin a friend was repairing

The Grail for Acoustics is a Pre-war D-45 Martin. Unobtainable by all accounts.I think David Crosby( EDIT- I mean Graham Nash) has one.IF you could find one in nice conditoin, which ain't gonna happen, you are looking at close to a third of a million dollars.

I have a '49 Gibson flat top. It's very beat-up but absolutely playable, the neck feels fantastic. Just had the bottom seven frets replaced. The top has ladder bracing so it's a lot quieter than a dreadnought, and less full-sounding. Great blues guitar.

Re: Oldest guitar you've ever owned? Played? Seen?

That is tough to answer. For example, I played my friend's older brother's 60's Les Paul all the time in the 80's and my Boss' 69 Strat. At the time the guitars were only 20 something years old. I also banged on my buddy's 50's Melody Maker a lot in the 80's. The oldest guitar I own is my 73 Ovation Deacon, 44 years.

This is a mates Gibson Acoustic, Circa around 1920. It's had a cleanup since this pic.

Re: Oldest guitar you've ever owned? Played? Seen?

Played a Martin from the late 1880's, small bodied ala a parlor guitar

I own a National Mandolin from 1930 but I guess oldest guitar I own is a '58 Guild X-50

Seen? I couldn't guess

Owned, '88 Harmony Discovery (short scale super strat)

Played, '60 Les Paul Standard

Saw, '27 Martin 0-42

Re: Oldest guitar you've ever owned? Played? Seen?

Oldest was a 1959 Jazzmaster. I sold that.
I also have a '64 Mosrite bass, '72 Fender Mustang guitar, two '73 Rickenbacker 4001 basses, and next up would be my '87 Ibanez SR-885LE bass.

I also owned a mid 60's Vox Phantom XII Stereo, and another '64 Mosrite bass, '74 P bass, '74 EB-2DC, and an '81 Les Paul Standard. I sold those.

I have a really old Danectro Convertible too. I've been told it's from the 50's, but it doesn't have a date anywhere.

Re: Oldest guitar you've ever owned? Played? Seen?

Didn't answer the other part of the question the oldest guitar I have ever seen was a Stratovarius Guitar from the 1600s at the Dangerous Curves show at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Re: Oldest guitar you've ever owned? Played? Seen?

My best mate's ex father in law has a 57 strat, I've played it on several occasions. Definitely a classic that had "that" sound.

Re: Oldest guitar you've ever owned? Played? Seen?

I have three relatively old-timers in the collection...

The guitar I first learned on, a mid-70's Estrada Deluxe Classical guitar:

The first guitar of my own, an early-80's Applause AA-31:

And my #1, a 1985 Westone Spectrum LX:

Never really played any really old ones, but I know I've seen a few... I just don't remember what they were! :dunno:

Re: Oldest guitar you've ever owned? Played? Seen?

I forgot to add, oldest I've played was an original 58 Korina V at Chicago Music Exchange (and I sounded like me on it, crap)
The oldest I've seen was a lute from the 1600s at a museum.
