On epi les pauls,

when it says that the body is alder/mahogany, does that mean it is some kind of composite, that it is different from guitar to guitar, or that they use pieces of each kind of wood.

Re: On epi les pauls,

Usually mahogany body with an alder top. It's not a bad sound, but it's different from what a trad Paul sounds like. You can get lucky though. Some Epi's do come with the traditional LP woods, you just have to look around. ;)

What he said.

It sounds cool, its just the low quality of the wood, the low quality of the hardware/electronics just make it bad.

I've heard of mahogany and mahogany, alder and alder, and mahogany backs with alder caps. Even some with mahogany backs and maple caps. It's luck of the draw.

Re: On epi les pauls,

If you plan on buying an Epi you should try out a bunch and pick which one you like the most out the of the selection. Some times they are total crap sometimes they are decent guitars. I have tried some pretty nice Epiphones before.

Definitely. My gf's uncle had the sweetest Epi I've ever played before. Not one finishing flaw _anywhere_. The frets and overall construction was dead on. It sounded like an acoustic unplugged. I believe the notes sustained for about 22 seconds (if a guitar can hold a note unplugged for 15 seconds, I know it's good). The only thing that wasn't impressive was the look of the alder, not as deep or rich looking as mahogany. For $150, he wasn't complaining and I actually liked the guitar more than the Gibson Les Paul Std. I had, no j/k. Of course, this is VERY rare, but it goes to show you if you look hard enough, Epi has some gems to be found.
