online band ?

Does anyone do the online band thingy ?
I am in PA 5 years and have not networked. I'm like beginner / intermediate level, but I have song ideas I want to see through.

I got my recording gear, Pro Tools, theory, practice all in the works. Currently I am trying to input drum tracks and although I think it is good to learn, it is also a time waster.

I have ads in Craigslist, but it is not working. Most people there want to play out.
Any site recommendations ?

Re: online band ?

have a look at "band in a box" - its a really useful program and great for making demos as well as charts

Re: online band ?

I would say study the drums as an instrument rather than just as a tool. That will help with your programming. You don't need a kit, but at least put some effort into the motions and techniques. Air drum to songs you like, and eventually the flow of it will open up to you.

It's not like air guitar, where your fingers can't land on a given string/fret that isn't there. Drums are spread out in a natural arc to work within your reach, so that makes it somewhat easier to transition from air drumming to real drumming. It also helps you to understand the chart flow when you program drums.

+1

Drumming is four note polyphonic. Keep this in mind when programming rhythmic patterns and fills.

The other thing that lazy programmers tend to do is not use stops, starts and accents very well.

IMO, a band is people interacting directly with one another - even if that is only to disagree vehemently. What you are describing in the OP is a recording project.

Re: online band ?

With the technology available today, it's still possible to have the same band dynamic, it just takes a bit longer for the response. That could be a good thing, as it gives you more time to think before you speak rather than throw out a rant.

Although you don't get the whole playing together thing unless you use that online collaboration software that adjusts everyone's latency.

But yeah, recording project where everyone contributes as a band rather than "here I wrote this, play it like that".
Only trouble with that is you end up giving away your work to one of the others when they say "oh, well, I joined/formed/found a local band yesterday, so I'm taking all the stuff we've been working on, see-ya"

Re: online band ?

I don't want to play the drums.
I just thought people would be more willing to join in (rather than just having a bare guitar track).
I'm looking to put songs together with other musicians - online.
I found a few sites like Kompoz and Myonline band , I was wondering if anyone here has experiences with these or better suggestions.

Re: online band ?

What kind of music are you doing? I may be able to help out with some drum programming in the little spare time i get nowadays.

Shoot me a PM and we'll discuss it.

well worth it. best writing/experimenting tool ever.
Using the real tracks you can generate backings in whatever style you like, then export all of the tracks to your audio program so you can track your guitars etc too and get a pretty good sound.
here is something i did using it for drums:

pretty damn realistic drum tracks, cos they are made of real loops and samples. You can't get that with a drum machine or midi.

Re: online band ?

I work with another guitarist and drummer who I've never met to record some tunes. We get together on NINjam via Reaper to come up with riffs together and then whoever has the reins on that idea fleshes it out on recording for the others to track over or give input on. NINjam is a great tool for real time jamming (even though its technically not real time).

I found both guys by coincidence. Both are just friends I made on online communities not related to music at all. I've also done a few SDUGF collabs with BEER$ who has been kind enough to lay down some bass for clips I posted here before.

Record your ideas and upload them. Its the best way to get people onboard with what you're doing

Not like you're at a Rush concert or in your car. Sitting down, doing the footwork and realistic arm/hand motions. I've done it myself, and if I can do it, anyone can. Sat behind my ex-drummer's kit one day and while I certainly wasn't Gene Krupa, I was able to keep a steady beat. He asked how long I'd been playing, and I said I didn't - I analyzed it, observed it from a theoretical perspective, and practiced air drumming along to songs. He didn't believe me, either, yet the proof was there.
