Only view this thread if you want to read about an idiotic nut dilemma ...

Like an idiot, I'm trying to justify (more like talk myself out of it) replacing a nut on a Les Paul. Not because there is anything wrong with it. It's a perfectly good Corian nut. It's slotted about as low as one could go without buzzing on the upper frets. No string binding, no tuning issues. And it's on a Tribute model, to boot. Nothing wrong with it except ... it's black. A while back I changed the buckers to double creams along with replacing the mounting rings from black to cream and a cream poker chip and switch tip. Kind of logically, it would have a "white" nut if it came from the factory with the cream trim. But still, the black nut really doesn't look out of place with a rosewood board and the top of the headstock being black. It's more a matter of the black nut just irking the hell out of me because I'm stupid that way.

I am perfectly capable of replacing a nut and under normal circumstances, I would have already given in to the color obsession and just done it soon after I replaced the pickups and trim. But, this is 2013 model Tribute and I'm all but positive that they welded the damned nut in the slot. Yes, I can competently cut it out and carefully clean the remaining shrapnel out of slot but it's a hassle just to change the color of the nut. So, I continue to try and talk myself out of it, seemingly fruitlessly as I'm finding myself slowly giving in to the stupidity of the nut color obsession.

So, while it ultimately won't matter because I don't generally listen to reason ... please try and talk me out of it anyway. :D

Just keep talking yourself out of it. It's good mental exercise.

When it comes to nuts, I am a true believer in 'if it works, don't break it'. It's just a color, man... If it were a custom build instrument to your specs, yeah, then the luthier is screwed and he should replace the nut. but that's not the case. you're likely to damage quite a bit of the guitar in the process because of how this nut is installed so you'd end up with one smouldering heap of dung.

To the portion of your quote in bold text ... If you knew me, you would know that's a challenge, not a deterrent. ;)

Endeavor to persevere.

They welded the nut in the slot?

Re: Only view this thread if you want to read about an idiotic nut dilemma ...

just mask it off and paint it. Let it cure extra long before you restring or play it.

Re: Only view this thread if you want to read about an idiotic nut dilemma ...

I would recommend painting your nuts.

Use White-Out. Strips.

Re: Only view this thread if you want to read about an idiotic nut dilemma ...

play the guitar like mad until it needs a refret then get the nut out and change it to white when it's time to refret cuz it'll be on the bench for a minute at that point anyways, and then when you have a white nut you'll have earned it! half joking.

Just think of how many LP players with brand new nuts suffer with tuning problems?

Re: Only view this thread if you want to read about an idiotic nut dilemma ...

I think black looks awesome on that guitar!
