I just put a t top in the neck of my ES-137 with a 57 classic in the bridge... for now I am liking the change... What is the general concensus on the difference between vintage and new gibson buckers...

ps. my t top has 1979 stamped on the back..

there are lots of different vintage buckers. paf's were all over the place.

t tops were pretty consistant. i like them in the neck but want a little more grunt in the bridge.

i like some new gibson pups, the bb1 and bb2 are nice pups

If it works for thats what matters.

Me, I don't like most T-Tops...they are alright more often than not but none of them really WOW me and these days they are really over hyped and WAY overpriced IMHO.

Vintage vs New...Gibson STILL hasn't made a pickup that really nails the PAF vibe, that said PAF were all over the place.

However, Gibson does have some good new pickups...The Burstbucker 1's, 2's, and 3's are pretty good...not real hot on the PRO's but they are alright...

I could do w/o Classic 57's but a lot of guys really like them.

I know what you mean I had to shell out $80 for that T Top... I couldn't believe how expensive it was...

That about sums it up for me too.

I have a 79 T-Top that I will never replace in the neck of a Les Paul. The bridge T-Top is now (and was a while ago) a Distortion.

The are pups. They are a5. They have a tone. Maybe you like it, maybe you love it, maybe you don't care. It's a pretty decently balanced all around kind of sound. Nothing too distinct or anything to get overly excited about.

For 80 bucks I could find a lot of better things, or at least things I liked better.

Re: Opinion of Vintage Gibson T Top Buckers

I love, LOVE T-tops in an all mahogany guitar- much less so in a les paul, but the neck as mentioned usually sounds much better than the bridge. I had an actual 76 explorer (the original reissue) with them and they were frikkinfab.

The price you paid is very fair, but for what MOST people are paying, I don't think they are worth that. You can get a custom wound pickup from any number of winders for that kind of money.

JeffB: I like your signature... And I have to say I feel exactly the same way as that person who posted that about Clapton...
