Opinion on this pickup pairing: Alnico 4 Bridge & Degaussed Alnico 5 Neck

Good Evening,

I was wondering what everyone's impression would be to this PAF style pickup combination, Alnico 4 Bridge & Degaussed Alnico 5 Neck.

The reason behind the Degaussed A5 is to provide some "slight muscularity" and "bassiness" to the neck position.

The resistance would be: Bridge - 8.1K
Neck - 7.8K

Assuming that the reason behind the bridge pickup is to provide a mid-rangey sort of tone, would you suggest swapping the A4 for either an A2 or an A3?

Thank you very much for your comments.

i can see how a weakened A5 in the neck and a standard A2 in the bridge could work, but i'd want a hotter bridge wind.

Greg, you can't have a possible answer to an impossible question, not even knowing the actual Gauss charge of that degaussed mag of yours.

Wanna "Vintage" tone? Get an A3 for the neck and an UOA5 for the bridge and call it a day. Give the guitar a decent setup and then start tweaking knobs to taste.

That's all there's to it.

HTH,

Yep.....no real answer to this. The magnet is only a 3rd of the tonal equation for the pickup alone. Add the guitar and amp into it too and......

Rather than degausss the A5, I'd either use it full strength, or use a RC A5, A4, or A3. If the neck PU was closer to mid 7K, I'd consider an UOA5 or A2.

Sorta seems like trying to do a lot of reverse engineering without all the pieces of the puzzle. DCR and magnets don't mean much without factoring in how the pup is wound.

Perhaps you could tell us the particular pickups you are talking about. This will give us a lot more to go on.
