I'm looking for a tone that is between the SSL and APS--something that is slightly warmer than the SSL, but not as warm and compressed as the APS. I believe either of the Antiquity single-coils might fit the bill, but I'm curious about the SSL52-1 as well. Since the SSL52-1 uses Alnico II on the plain strings and Alnico V on the wound strings, I'm thinking it should have less highs than the SSL, but less mids and tighter low-end than the APS.
However, the EQ rating for the SSL52-1 is 6 (treble), 5 (mids), and 5 (bass), which indicates less highs and more mids than the APS-1 (7/4/5). Its resonant peak is also lower than that of the APS-1. I believe this means that the SSL52-1 will be darker, thicker, and rounder than the APS-1. Someone recently said the SSL52-1 sounded very fat, very thick, and didn't have much quack or highs (for a vintage-style pickup). Anyone else have similar or different experiences with the SSL52-1 pickup?
Thanks for any info.
