Optical compressor, parallel and seriel

Meaning that it can be set to blend or be like a normal comp.
It is coming for the new 9v series!
Here is a picture of the prototype.
It will enter our 9v line early next year I think?
Together with a chorus and probally a flanger too, and an overdrive.

Re: Optical compressor, parallel and seriel

What is the theory behind optical compressors? The first I heard of it was a couple of years ago from a Carvin catalog?

Re: Optical compressor, parallel and seriel

Very cool link. Thanks IDSnowdog.

Rid - What are the sonic benefits of running parallel as opposed to serial? In operation, does it essentially give the sound level a soft floor so to speak so that volume can't drop past a certain volume, but it won't completely crush dynamics as well?

Re: Optical compressor, parallel and seriel

Well it is a blender, like an insert on a mixing console, you can set the comp pretty extreme that way along with the normal clean signal.
Any good compressor will never affect any dynamics a guitar can come up with, as its range is pretty narrow for starters:D
The sonic difference between this one and our more expensive comp, yeah it is optical, thus somewhat slower, giving a more oldschool feel, as our other is very fast and an actual industrial standart for compressors:)
It is also slightly more crisp, as the signal does pass the optical cell, we made it pretty simple to keep a good pure signal, that would coloured by the opto, and it is great with both driven and clean signals, I personally like it alot.
It can go from very compressed, like a old MXR/Ross to more subtle stuff, like our own normal comp, it is not as fast, but it is doing quite a job of it, we are abit surprised how well it really works, as it is pretty simple.
Old studio comps, where tubebased with opto's, and those gives a very unique sound and prescense, this one captures some of that while being small and without the tube:)
We are quite happy with it, I use it alot now, and I switch around with both settings, depending on what I want with it, both setting has good qualities.
Phaser....hehe we have one, but I think that we will have to make one more in the future!?
I forgot about the Wah Bah...a wah will also come out soon.
Plus one more amp, a Brit styled one at 50 watts, EL-34's and is a mix between a Marshall and a Hiwatt:D
Will come as a combo and head version.
A 9v overdrive will also see the light of the day, made almost like the one I made for the Quattro, but with a cleanboost, and a toggle to change between two caps for the lowend, it is called DC-drive right now, and it is a based upon a 9v input, but the internals has a little thing going on, so that it will not be as flatsounding as most 9v'ers can be.
I need a vacation;)

Re: Optical compressor, parallel and seriel

Being that it's Optical , How is the S/N ratio? I imagine it would be very quite.
That's my main beef with my CS-3... It's to noisy!

Re: Optical compressor, parallel and seriel

Well as for throw together prototype, it is quiet, it will probally get even beter when we make it onto a pcb for more testings, but it is quiet, we like quiet;)
Loudy!! hehe
But set to extreme it will boost everything else, and that will like an od bring up noise!

Re: Optical compressor, parallel and seriel

Will it have a blend knob to adjust the wet dry mix?

Would you folks consider makign an XLR input/output version of this with 48v phantom power? This sounds like it would also be great for use with mics.

I thought that would be the case. Since it hadn't been mentioned, I thought I'd ask just to clarify. Sounds very very nice. How many clams is it gonna go for?
