Orange crush cr-120h - finally tried one

Clean channel seemed ok. Dirty side was one trick pony - gain sounded good only when 3/4 up, and tone stack didn't seem too responsive to me. While it was fun, not much of a wow factor there. Definitely sounded orangey, but I guess I'm used to amps with some options for the gain side of things.

That's kind of a bummer, I've been wanting to check one out for a while but there ain't none around here. I think it's supposed to sound like a Thunderverb, does it compare at all? What's 3/4 up on the dirty channel sound like? Is it loud like a Sunn SS amp? Or lame like a Fender SS amp?

Actually, what I'm really asking is if you can boost it into deathmetal territory and does it feel like a legit 120W.

Re: Orange crush cr-120h - finally tried one

I was in a store and couldn't quite crank it up. It was going through some type of orange 2 x 12 cab. Not sure if it sounds like a thunderverb. It sounded like a more powerful version of the crush combos to me, which isn't bad, but at the same time not that inspiring. A boost would be nice to try. There is a cool reverb switch though, which goes between two totally different reverb sounds, I liked feature a lot.

I wasn't impressed by the one I played. Uninspiring is a good way to describe it.

Re: Orange crush cr-120h - finally tried one

I played on one but also wasnt able to crank it. I thought it sounded good, but didnt "feel" quite the same. I am not sure if turning up the volume more would have helped it. I know it is supposed to sound like a rockerverb, but it had kind of its own thing going. I imagine if you were recording you could get it to sound close to what you were wanting though, I just wouldnt want one as my main amp.

Bummer. I'm more looking for a VH140C or an Excalibur, but this thing had my interest piqued.

Crate GX-130C

I have two. They do the job.

There is a 20w Crush combo at my LMS for $60 bucks, I've been really tempted to buy it for the month it has been there, as I've always wanted to try an Orange, but I'm guessing from this thread that they aren't particularly good sounding?

I think the small ones are nice for the price. It's when you add 100 watts and about $400 to the price tag where it seems not so nice.

That is a very good point... Hell, for $60 bucks, even if it stopped working the second I brought it home, it's still not a huge loss. Plus I would have a bunch of components to salvage. Haha.

I want one as a backup but Ill prolly wait and scoop up a laney aor 100

Re: Orange crush cr-120h - finally tried one

I quite liked the small one I tried in store. I mean, I don't really care about gain channels on amps, but the clean tone was fairly pleasant and dark in a british way. I liked it, I was tempted to pick it up for how cheap it was, just as a practice amp.
