Orange Micro Terror - thoughts??

I've been looking for a relatively decent amp, for home and very small shows.. what does everyone think of the Orange Micro Terror? I play mainly classic rock, but also stuff like Futures and even metal (I understand it probably wouldn't be good for metal). I know it's a bit lacking in features but thoughts?

Thanks,
Wadey

Re: Orange Micro Terror - thoughts??

I've recently bought a micro terror myself and am very happy with it.

At about 2 or 3 on the volume control through my 2x12 with V30s it's easilly loud enough to gig with, even more so if you mic it up.

Lots of good reviews on the Orange forum for these lil' things... if they're biased or not is another story but they seem to be great amps for what they are... thinking of getting one myself.

Could you elaborate on this? Small venues? (meaning a smallish bar? Or maybe a high-school sort of gym?) Clean sounds possible? Or cleanish-dirty? Maybe possible to play a song such as .......... for a crowd of ............ while keeping up with a drummer, bassist, two guitarists and vocal?

I find that 'easily loud enough to gig with' is a very wide definition, especially for bands that don't have any 'clean' sounds in their repertoire, which essentially means that almost any amp is loud enough if you crank it and even more so if you mic it.

Ok, I'll try!

My band is a 3 piece plus vocal, so I have no other guitar or keyboard to keep up with volume wise and when we gig we have access to an 8k PA rig so aren't lacking in power that way.

I've honestly never tried using the amp set perfectly clean as it's not a sound I use much, and I have dedicated amps for that if I ever want it. I tend to have the gain on the Micro set at about 6/10 which at that level is just above 'Dirty Clean' and then I hit it with an OD to get a bit more out of it.

When I tried the amp in the shop we had the Micro hooked up to an Orange PC212 cab with V30s and with the gain at about 6 or 7 and the volume on 3 and it was plenty loud enough for anything gig wise I tend to play. With the gain full up there's more than enough again available for what I play (70s Punk, Classic Rock, 80s Rock/Metal) and I've even seen videos on youtube of people using it for br00talz when pushing it with various OD pedals, so it can definitely cover the heavier stuff too.

I will just say that the Micro is actually my backup amp incase anything happens with my Splawn or SLO clone; it isn't my main amp that I use all the time.

it looks really cool, but I am more considering buying an EHX magnum44 because it is prolly a lil louder, and it is smaller

Been using that onstage and in the studio for over a year. Usend it even for bass once and it worked nicely. Absolutely recommended.

On topic, I'm not a potential buyer but after some testing, if I wanted to get a mini (half)tube amp for recording purposes, Micro Terror was among the two I'd consider. I really liked the dynamics. I prefer the texture of the lil Night Train slightly better but man it would be a really tough call.
