Orange Squeezer vs. Dyna Comp?

Anybody have experience with these two classic compressors? The MXR Dyna Comp is sort of the standard by which all guitar compressors are judged. Andy Summers, Jamie West-Oram, even Lowell George IIRC were well-know Dyna Comp users.

I find the little Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer intriguing - it's so simply, and reputed to be a great-sounding compressor. I believe Jeff Baxter used one extensively in Steely Dan. They're available as re-issues these days.

I'm actually thinking about building a compressor, trying to figure out which one. Critique away!

P.S. - Also, if anyone has any experience by which to compare/contrast all the various Dyna Comps (script vs. block. LED vs. non-LED, new vs. old re-issues vs. vintage, yadda, yadda, yadda) please do.

I bought a PCB from generalguitargadgets.com after researching simple compressors, but I have yet to construct it! The PCB looks like it'll be a pretty simple build.

i had a rack mount compressor for years in my rack .. least expensive dbx model i think (166 ?)... liked it alot .... sorry bro, havent been a pedal stomper for years

I have a 1970's Dyna Comp block version, the one thing I don't like about it is when you turn it on it would change the tone, kind of like when you roll your tone knob down. I don't know if all compressors are like this, but it definately needs a tone knob like the Boss compressors. It has great sustain though

Lots of guys here use compressors, but you're looking for a specific comparison. I have experience with the Analog Man Bi-CompROSSor (a dual compressor -- Ross on one side, Orange Squeezer on the other), and the Boss CS-2 (not to be confused with the current CS-3 model).

I've heard great things about the (vintage) MXR Dyna Comp, but I've never used one.

Well, compare the two sides of your AM - the Ross and the MXR are supposed to be very similar.

Right on. I find the Ross side darker and more powerful, but noisier as well. I like to use this side with humbuckers. The OS side has more spank; it's brighter, and I tend to use that for single-coil chicken pickin' sorts of stuff. More of a one-trick pony, but a great trick.

At first, I used the OS side way more than the Ross side, but now I find myself using them about equally (although my tastes lean more toward the OS side of things).

The Boss CS-2 is an altogether different beast, and it's an absolute keeper. It's got a great roundness to it. (It's difficult to describe sounds, isn't it? :) )

I used to have a MXR Dyna, old block logo. It was ok but I didn't get along with it. Actually, I never got along with compressors until recently. A few years ago I tried the Keeley Kompressor which is a Ross/Dyna clone with some changes here and there. After some fiddling, one of Robert's booth helpers showed me how to use it and that changed it for me. Incredible compressor, great sound, didn't color the base sound really at all. I wanted to buy one on the spot but I knew I couldn't afford it.

I've heard nothing but good things about the Orange Squeezer from users who have the original, reissues or DIY'd one themselves.

In all honestly, I don't think you could go wrong either way.
