Hi, I'm looking for a luncbox amp that will be used for practive, rehearsals and smaller gigs. I'm already decided on orange (in my price range). So, the two amps I was looking at are dark terror and tiny terror. I'm looking for tones like Tool (10 000 days especially), alice in chains (think of them bones) and maybe some weezer type stuff (90s). Which one would suit me better?

Tiny Terror is like a 70s hard rock vibe, the designer says he was aiming for AC/DC and the Sex Pistols with that amp. You're talking about modern bands with heavier tones so I'd recommend the Dark.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror vs. Dark Terror

Thanks for your opinion! While I agree that Tiny Terror is more classic amp (obviously), but I've heard some people say it can do stuff like that. How does Dark Terror clean up using guitar volume with gain like 12 o'clock (i'm using a les paul)? Because I still want to be able toget some cleanish sounds just with guitar volume rolled off.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror vs. Dark Terror

If you were gona go for like a rock tone that cleans up with your volume knob and throw a pedal or two in front for heavier stuff, the Tiny Terror is great. The Dark Terror has cleans available but in my experience you get them by turning the gain way down on the amp.

Not to complicate things further but i think you really want the OR15. It has the 70s voicing but the modern amount of gain. I've tried literally every 15w Orange amp since the AD15 and the OR15 does it all, except maybe for Fender / surf / country cleans.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror vs. Dark Terror

Thanks! The OR is like 100$ more than tiny terror + I prefer lunchbox style amp. Isn't Jim Root one really similar to OR15?

Also, I've just been to a music store and stopped to play Marshall DSL40C (with les paul deluxe). First channel is great and gives you that rock sound, but there's not a whole lot of gain, so a pedal of some sort is necessary to get a little heavier. The first channel is good, but the second one... just sounds pretty bad for rythm stuff, but it's alright for leads. It didn't clean up very well when on 2nd channel at 12 o'clock.

So how would a tubescreamer solve the Tiny Terror lack of gain issue? Would it do stuff like tool?

I have a Tiny Terror. I think it does heavier stuff just fine if you have a good right hand and hotter pickups. I even played a gig with just that amp and a 15" speaker... And it was great. Did a SLEEP cover and all.

The OR-15 is really the superior amp in every way, compared to the Tiny Terror. I haven't played the Jim Root, but I think it's more modern sounding.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror vs. Dark Terror

I like the versatility of the Tiny vs the Dark. But like Empty daid, might want to look into the OR as well.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror vs. Dark Terror

The Dark is MORE versatile. The Shape knob changes the sound of the amp drastically. The Tiny has a tone knob that turns down your highs.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror vs. Dark Terror

The thing I like about the Tiny Terror, which I own, is that the 3 knobs have a ton of range. The simple tone knob allows the circuit to be uncluttered sounding, and honestly just sits in the sweet spot anyway on 5 - 6. The gain stages are amazing on the Tiny Terror, because you can run the gain low and volume high for a loud Marshall JMP/JCM type tone, but as the gain increases you can hear it swell up into an Alice in Chains/Black Sabbath type tone. Despite the fact that the Dark Terror is more known for searing metal tones, I think the highgain tone on the Tiny Terror sounds more organic, like the OR-15. There's no lack of gain on any of these amps.

I also did some tube swapping, and found that the Ruby tubes they ship with actually sound perfect with the amps.....no need to upgrade tubes.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror vs. Dark Terror

I think that with careful tweaking, the Dark can cop 99% of the tone of the Tiny, but not the other way around. The shape control is super powerful on the DT.

That said, I'm going for an OR15 soon. Might try for a Dual Terror at some point, too.

Clearly I need to play with a Dark Terror again. I did not try that.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror vs. Dark Terror

I originally had a Tiny Terror, then got an OR15. OR15 wins.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror vs. Dark Terror

I like the Tiny Terror enough to hang onto it, but think a person shopping with cash in hand should buy the OR-15 over the three.

The TT is cool but the lack of an FX loop is a bummer. The others have one.

Not to derail, but do you mind if I ask what 15" speaker you use? I sometimes run my OR15 through a single Eminence 15" Big Ben in a Carvin single bass cab.

Re: Orange Tiny Terror vs. Dark Terror

Tiny Terror is not an option anymore. I'm really interested in OR15 after hearing so many good things about it. I just think it sounds really chunky and kinda almost buzzy on higher gain. How do these amps (or15 and DkT) clean up with guitars volume? With gain at like 12 o'clock and PAF pups?

Re: Orange Tiny Terror vs. Dark Terror

I'm not looking for the cleanest tones ever, just something that can get kinda pushed clean by rolling off the volume on guitar.
