Ordered some hipshot tuners......

And I'm worried. I actually had the xtender on this bass but there was something wrong with it. It would grind when tuning (there was nothing wrong with the actual extender part, other than its just as easy to just tune to drop D ) and the other thing is being nickel, they wear really easy (coating)

So, they were a great price, new and free shipping at reverb but I really need new tuners. Hipshots are the only replacement option for MIM basses.

Funny, all my other hipshot products are ace, hoping that it was a fluke. But I'm not exactly of good luck with these things.

Re: Ordered some hipshot tuners......

I love their tuners, my buddy uses the Extender on at least one of his basses. Makes it easy to take one for travel gigs.

The Baby Grand tailpiece was not so good though, the plating came right off

Re: Ordered some hipshot tuners......

Yeah, I'm already counting on that. It's won't be as bad as a bridge but my question is, why not chrome? How can you go wrong with chrome?

Re: Ordered some hipshot tuners......

@ITC: Nah, I did all that. As long as these are smooth, it'll be ok, if not, then "hipshot, you have some splaining to do" :D

Re: Ordered some hipshot tuners......

Forgot to mention, my renewed "faith" in trying these are that the Craparision came with hipshots, and that's one thing I really liked about that guitar. Those tuners were sweet.

If the chrome plating is thin yeah you can go wrong with it unfortunately.

Re: Ordered some hipshot tuners......

Really? Everything I've had chrome has been kosher. Cosmo chrome? Completely different story. My Ibanez 1520 is awesome. Had it for 7/8 years or something like that. No wear at all. I experimented with some of those "premium" ones with the cosmo? The stuff started tarnishing in a couple of months.

Re: Ordered some hipshot tuners......

You know, I'm just an old man with a passion to play but I could swear that the extra mass gives a little bigger sound. Probably placebo, but honestly it feels different.

Re: Ordered some hipshot tuners......

longcat has a set of black Hipshot Ultralights on her Squier Bronco. Generally speaking I'm not a fan of open-gear tuners, but these have been solid so far. Also no chipping or flaking of the finish to date. To be fair this bass doesn't get a ton of play, but the tuners still look essentially new.

We also have Hipshot Extender Keys on 3 other basses and those have likewise been solid. They also replaced a failed (and very old) Extender that had been on longcat's Spector when we got it. All I ended up having to pay was return shipping to them, the rest of the replacement was free.
