Yeah not too much info on the head. I have a Marshall 4x12 and the combos don't have external speaker out.

Oddly enough the head has a 5inch speaker built in

Yeah- this is a great idea. More heads (especially modeling ones) should have this feature. I bet that is all you need for practice.
