Ordered the wrong sized PUP

Hey guys, I recently ordered the Custom Custom pickup from a dealer for my MIM strat. Upon installation and observation I noticed that they ordered me the SH-11 and not the TB-11 used for tremolo systems, so the poles do not line up with the strings. How much of a difference does that make as far as sound goes? Should I try to return it, or just leave it as is? Thanks.

Re: Ordered the wrong sized PUP

try adjusting the poles, typically it isnt enough to worry about

Re: Ordered the wrong sized PUP

You cannot adjust the spacing between the poles with the other poles though...only the spacing between the poles and strings...I don't know, it kinda pisses me off that I told them repeatedly what I needed, what I was putting it in, etc. Then I get it in and it is the wrong one...waste of my time.

Re: Ordered the wrong sized PUP

i hear ya and it kinda sucks. was this a local mom and pop store or a guitarget?

fender uses normal spaced buckers on factory strats. for example the pearly gates plus that comes in some fenders is always normal spaced.

i am very aware that you cant adjust the spacing between the poles. what i was sayin about the pole pieces is that you should raise the poles that dont match up slightly to bring the magnetic field a little closer to the strings to balance the string to string volume

Re: Ordered the wrong sized PUP

A guitarget store... About the spacing...really? Then why was the factory humbucker on the guitar spaced wider than the SD bucker? I'm confused about this now... In general are aftermarket humbuckers spaced more narrow than factory? I contacted them, and they said sense they made a mistake they will replace it with what I wanted, but I do not want to feel like a moron and bring in the pickup that is trem-spaced. How can I check for this?

Re: Ordered the wrong sized PUP

if you got a sh11 its normal spaced. since you got it from guitarget then make them get you a new one that is trem spaced which is a tb11.

there is no standard for spacing, many companys go off gibson spacing but not all of them. being a mim strat means it probably has some cheap overseas pup which may have wider spacing, who knows. have guitarget get you the right one at no charge

Re: Ordered the wrong sized PUP

I always use regular HB's on my Floyd and Fender guitars. The poles don't have to be exactly on. Mine sound great. All that does is make the HB not fit in normal pickup rings. The one that comes with it isn't always the right color or height for the guitar it's going in. It's all a gimic. In the beginning there was only one size, and that size works.

Re: Ordered the wrong sized PUP

Yeah, I don't pay attention to trem spaced anymore either. A pickup is creating an entire magnetic field, and as long as the strings are over it, it's fine.

One trivial tidbit.....on strats, the poles are barely under the strings on the neck/middle high E's. For 50 years, hardly anyone's noticed!

By buying standard humbuckers, you can always use them in any guitar too, so you don't have tremspaced ones sitting around that you can't use for LP type guitars.

Re: Ordered the wrong sized PUP

Hmm....good points. Here is another question for you about this. I got the Custom Custom not only b/c I thought it would sound great, but for its capability to become a Custom 5 and a Custom just by switching out magnets. Would the trem-spacing affect the type of magnets I could get, or do humbuckers and trembuckers use the same size magnets?

Re: Ordered the wrong sized PUP

Does anyone know about the magnet switchability between a regular humbucker and a trembucker?

Re: Ordered the wrong sized PUP

I've got a sh-11 and though the bridge is hardtail it seems to be the trem spacing...

Does it make a difference though? I don't think! I got the all the beefy mids, the treble is rounder, and the bass is clear but not overbearing.

So I think it's good that there's a trem-spacing option but in most guitars I don't believe it to be neccesary
